Genset exhaust "rework"

My 2000 Allure #30549 came with a PowerTech genset. Some say they are noisy but running it while Im inside doesnt seem to be really that noisy....BUT...

Outside....the exhaust...GEEZE LORD!! It sounds like a high pressure air hose that someone cut the end off of. EXTREMLY loud "hissing sounds".

Anyone reworked this critter and toned it down some? All info about a rework appreciated!

P.S. and no...Im not switching to an Onan...lol

I have an Allure (30592) with the Powertech Gen. At the 2001 CC Rally, a tech was working on my coach and recommended that the spark arrester on the end of the tailpipe be removed. If you don't plan to run your genset in dry grass, it is a simple job to remove and should stop the hissing sound.

Here's what I did to my hissing snake exaust: I replaced the system from the gen outlet on back. I cut the threaded end off the black pipe, which resembles high-pressure gas pipe commonly used in natural gas applications (?) and had it welded onto a 1 1/1" exaust pipe that I had chromed at the local shop.
That assembly threads into the existing outlet. The new hangers are stainless steel and the pipe looks lots nicer than that afterthought the manufacturer used. You can use a matching chrome exaust tip to the engine extension available throught J.C. Whitney catalog.
Looks nice and gives you something else to keep clean and polished in your spare time.

This is another example of CC's thoughtless and apparently untested design work. They chose to put a long exhaust pipe on the Powertech gensets on the Intrigues - almost 20 feet! - and then install the spark arrester at the end remote from the generator. The arrester is simply a fine metal mesh through which the exhaust products pass and is designed to prevent the passage of large pieces of incandescent debris from being emitted and setting the world on fire. The problem is, to continue working effectively, the mesh has to be operated at a sufficiently high temperature to "burn off" soot and other deposits. No chance of this happening on the Intrigue design. Typically, at less than 50 hours generator usage, the mesh is almost completely clogged producing enormous back pressure on the engine (just like a PAC brake) and of course, the hissing of gases escaping through the remaining open areas.
Solution: exactly as stated - remove and discard the entire item. Downside: with such a long pipe, the probability of incandescent debris sufficient to start a fire being discharged is quite remote and exercising a little prudence will keep you and your environment safe from conflagration. Upside: no more hissing, improved engine life and the prospect of achieving full rated output from your generator. Overall, not a bad trade.

While that's a good idea, beware that operating a genset without a certified spark arrester is actually prohibited in national forests and possibly some other areas.
