Hurricane Water heater and Zip Dee Awning

I have a 2003 Intrique 42' ovation floor plan with three slides. I am having a continuing problem with the Hurricane system. Obviously I am not using the furnace apect of the system in summer but use the water heating part. I continually have a fault code "0" showing up about 75% of the time. Has anyone experienced this problem? The burner will not fire and we run out of hot water when showering very quickly. I am getting no satisfaction from Hurricane.
On another matter, I would like to replace the Zip Dee patio awning with a Girard or similar electric awning. Has anyone done this with three slides? Can a Girard be added after market. Some CC owners tell me the coach has extra support built in whne the coach is built.

Regarding the Hurricane, get in line. Many of us are having ongoing problems with the system. Even though I had mine "upgraded" with a new control board, I still have to reboot the thing at least once each trip. It just looses its' mind, I guess.
As to the Girard, I have one on my coach, it is handy, but yesterday in Grants, NM, the wind was just enough (really not that bad) that it would not stay out, but parked itself twice before I gave up. If you park for days at a time, you can't hang side sunscreens from it, as it may park itself at any time. Just something to think about.
I think it still works for us, as we are more "travelers" as opposed to "campers".

According to the Girard rep at the Ft. Meyers rally, you could add the awning to any coach. They do the installation but most will not cover the Door because of the front cap. Each awning comes with pros and Cons.

What do you not like about the Zip-Dee awning? We would trade our Girard for just about anything else out there! It "puddles" water when it rains (even after the Girard rep adjusted it), a strong puff of wind sends it home, and there's no easy way to get leaves and tree debris off of it (other than climbing on the roof of the coach with a power blower).

We were even thinking about checking into changing the Girard to something else!

I don't like the Zip-Dee on our '98 Intrigue, either. After pulling out the awning roller, I have to hook the two end arms into slots on the motorhome, alongside the awning's protective metal cover. Very awkward, although made simpler when a special tool is used. A friend dropped an arm while trying to hook it and scratched his coach. I understand the "newer" Zip-Dees are improved.

The newer Zip-Dee awning arms come coated with a rubber end on the movable arm. This eliminates the problem of scratching the coach if the arm is accidently dropped. For those folks with the older Zip- Dee awnings, you can purchase a "rubber dip in a can" at your local hardware store and dip the end of your awning arm into the can and get the same safety protection. I also use the rubber dip to coat tool handles to make them easier to hold.

I'm with you, I don't like the Zip Dee design either. Mine has broken in the wind twice. One of the pot metal hooks on the upper arm that connect at the top broke in two and Zip Dee sent me a new hook (pot metal of course). Next, the rivets on the metal cover that hold part that the pot metal hooks go into popped out. I put bolts in their place. I like the high quality of Zip Dee but the design of the upper arm sucks. jerry in NM, '00 Magna.

Apparently, for short term use, some folks don't even use the upper arms.
FWIW - In 36 years' RVing, we've seldom left a patio awning extended at night or when leaving the campground for any length of time. It literally takes less than two minutes to retract it. And I'm never in a hurry .

Sorry to be late responding. Have been out in the wild north of British Columbia on my 22-year old boat. Strange how it is longer than the new Allure, twice as heavy, has more systems, and in 5 weeks I spent about 2 hours on maintenance.

But on to the two questions. First, the Girard factory rep, whose shop is at the Eugene airport, could not get a higher rating from us. If you want his name and number I can forward it when back in Oregon.
As to the Hurricane, those of us who are stuck with them need to continue to compare notes and contact CC as a group. As we previously reported, CC was very responsive in replacing the entire unit [the first one burned] and we are also on our third board [as yet untested]. Since the rest of you are still having board problems, we expect the same. Hate to mention it, but Hurricane has gotten a terrible name within the boating community, and that is in BC where they are built. I think we may be looking at total replacements with a different brand.
I am constantly amazed by the expertise within this group. In three weeks I had 285 messages waiting, mostly regarding CC's. Anyone considering joining the RV set should spend a few hours reading such a list to see what lies ahead. Or on the bright side, to see how much help is available. We have had some growing pains with our Girard system but now really love it. IMHO, if the rain water is puddling, your fabric tension is not taut enough. Also, it only needs a little slope (from front to rear) to make the water run off the rear. Also, the windspeed adjustment can be increased - sounds like it's set too low if a "strong puff of wind" parks it. If I have an accumulation of pine needles/leaves/debris on the fabric I take my wash brush and gently bump the fabric from below which works for us. Good Luck - we have found that while all Girard reps we have met are super people, some are better at the adjustments than others.
