Engine chip change

I have read comments that have discussed changing the chip in the engine controls to increase HP. I have had no personal experience with this. I assume that it also increases torque accordingly. Right? How does it work? Here are a few questions that come to mind:
1. Does the chip simply increase the amount of fuel injected for each power stroke? If so, does the exhaust smoke increase due to some unburned fuel?
2. How much torque is gained. Is torque directly proportional to the % of HP gain?
3. Can the chip be changed on my Cummins ISC that is curently rated at 330 HP?
4. Does fuel economy normally suffer? How much?
5. Are there any undesirable effects on the drive train?
6. Eny effect on engine and tranny heat; cooling system overload?
7. What is the cost? Is it a tech application only or is DIY possible?
8. For those who have made the mod, any regrets?

I realize that this modification and the desirability of the results may be based on personal preferences. I also realize that some answers would depend on driver contol and habits. But, after all is said and done, is the increased performance worth the cost? I'm asking for opinions here.

I had an Allure with an ISC 330, too once. The issue isn't the engine as much as it is the transmission.

The ISC has a 3060 the ISC350 had the 3060P as I remember. The 3060 can't handle the extra torque.

All you can do with chips is to flatten the torque curve so there is no fall off above 1500rpm. This can

be a help, but nothing tremendous. Plus you have to realize there is only so much capability in the

cooling system for transmission and engine. I've seen 350's boosted to 440 on Dynastys, but the

owners said they eventually had to change to 3000 world transmissions and that was a big cost and

their radiators had to be updated and addition coolers added. I know the new transynd transmission

fluid will help you with your endeavor and an auxilary Hayden cooler will help too. Good luck, its only

I had a 2000 Allure with a 330 Cummins. When I was in Newfoundland I had it upgraded to a 350 hp. at a regional Cummins dealer in Mt. Pearl. They said they could increase it to over 400 hp, but I told them I has a 3060 Allison and it wouldn't handle it. They said there was a enough "fudge factor" in the Allison to easily handle the increase in torque (950 ft. lbs. to 1050 ft. lbs) in the increase from 330 to 350 hp. They just hooked it up to a computer for a few minutes and we were finished. I had to pay a $200 fee to Cummins so the change was put into the Cummins database and my engine would not be changed back at the next repair shop. The computer change cost about $135 Canadian (10 years go ). It did make a difference when going up a long, steep hill. Not every Cummins dealer can do an upgrade, it has to be a central location so call ahead.
