Dash air compressor seems to have stopped - any suggestions

Hello - I have 2002 Affinity 6071 with a C12 and my dash air cooling seems to have died slowly yesterday when driving and now does not cool at all. Blows air fine but none of the air conditioning settings get the compressor to cool. I went back and looked at the compressor when the motor is running with the air on. It is a made in Japan Tram compressor. The center part does not turn. Seems to me in the past the center park of the compressor turns when the air is on.
I am 10 days into a two months trip. We usually use the dash air a lot on the road as we also have one in the rear of the coach and it is very effective. Up until yesterday at noon it was working great. We are in Glennwood Springs CO heading east on I70.
Any thoughts? Clutch went out? Is there a fuse controlling the clutch?

Bob, I am no expert, but have a thread running that discusses my AC Clutch not working.

Here is what I think I have learned:

Check your fuses in the front basement compartment.
If you have a fuse that does not light up when the ignition is turned on. Replace it.
Then look up the number in your wiring schematics portion of your manual. It may be the fuse that controls power that runs to a relay and then to the clutch coil. The clutch coil is the only electrical item in your compressor.
If so, in the engine compartment look for a wire that runs from the clutch at the top of the compressor. Find the connector in the first 10 inches from the compressor and disconnect the wire.
Start the engine and turn on the AC switch. If the fuse does not blow, turn off the AC switch, plug the compressor clutch wire back in, and again turn on the AC switch. If the fuse then blows, you have a problem on that circuit.
This is where my AC service center quit because it was an electrical issue.
I then bought 45' of 16 gauge wire and bypassed the circuit by running the wire from the fuse contact to the clutch wire.
In my case it blew the fuse again with the relay, the AC switch, and the OEM wire not in the circuit.
Another test is to use your multimeter set to measure resistance with leads running to the Clutch Coil wire end and the other to the compressor case or bolt contacts.
You should get 3.5 Ohms of resistance or so. I get that on my new compressor but ultimately I got @ 0.5 Ohms on my old compressor
I concluded, but do not know for sure yet, that the clutch coil was the problem. I have elected to replace the 17 year old compressor rather than just the clutch or the clutch coil.
You may chose another path or not have the same problem but the above are easy tests to do to get informed and seek help.

Good chance friend you lost Freon Charge due to a leak. Same thing happend to me. Im a do it your selfer but After repairing a leaky hose re-charged ran fine again till it lost charge. A Friend with knowledge of auto a/c units can help you resharge your sistem. Also a good Auto Air shop can help. With only 70k miles on ours think engine heat hurts the compressor. Wallmart sells Freon and re-charge hose. Keep us posted. Ken 99 Allure 30356

I called CC service today in Junction City. They think that what happened from what I described is that charge got low and that the compressor shut down because of that. He said that there is a pressure switch that protects the compressor. So either it just got low or there is a leak or the switch for pressure failed.
Makes sense to me. I was unaware that there was a low coolant sensor.

Any automotive ac system can leak if not used frequently to keep seals lubricated. It is unlike a home HVAC system which the compressor is enclosed.
Your system has a low pressure switch on the accumulator/drier that will cutoff the power to the compressor clutch to protect the compressor when the freon level leaks down to a certain pressure. Often times if you have some freon still in the system, just servicing the system would be enough to get the ac working again. Many AC techs will check for static pressure in system and then bypass the low pressure switch to do a quick check to ensure the compressor clutch is engaging and compressor turns.

I am also, "unaware that there is a low coolant sensor." Where is it? I have a window in the engine that shows if the air coolant is flowing.

Should be screwed into the accumulator/dryer. There is a connector with two wires attached to the switch.
