My Advantium Adventure

Hi,

Put some thoughts together on our experience(s) with GE's Advantium Oven. In particular this bit covers interior bulb replacement, how we cracked the crystal and cleaning. Might save a few folks some time, bread and aggravation. For your reading pleasure it's

We are going to the Ballon Festival next week. Yesterday I was driving the motorhome and the VIM indicated Trans Comm. What should I be checking ?

I think this is referred to as "Crapmanship".

For your next great adventure with the Advantium wait until it stops working.
We have the same unit in the stick house as the one in the coach. So there was no training involved using it.

the one at the stick house stopped working so, we called in the repair person. The Magnet used in it cracked. It's like $250 for the magnet and U must remove the oven
from where it is installed and take the outside cover off to get at where the magnet is installed. It not hard (as I watched) but it is time consuming.

Jim - The oven cooks well and I guess that's all the market for it is interested in. I still think routine maintenance is important and should be considered. More customer and wallet friendly designing. Any photos of your frig conversion? I've been trying to put together a complete chronicle of this but need to speak with someone who's done it. We went the Pines RV Regrigeration route. Thanks.

Dave - A complete failure did cross my mind. I just hope my oven bulb write up doesn't put the whammy on our oven. Time we'll tell. Thanks for the information.

John - Go outside and take off the access cover. Make sure you don't smell anything funny like ammonia and/or burning parts. Inspect the boiler insulation. Make sure the cooling unit is secure to the back of the frig. Also make sure the absorber coils and vessel aren't running excessively hot. If you are (or have been) running the frig constantly, it's a good idea to be proactive about replacing the cooling unit. Be safe out there.

Great information, Scott. Thank you very much for sharing your "adventure". The light in my Advantium 120 has been out ever since we bought the coach last November. I didn't even know for sure it had a light until I looked more closely (I thought it should have one). Having been without it for almost a year and after reading your description of how difficult it is to do it, I will wait until I am really bored with nothing else to do before tackling it. (Thanks also for the heads up about ordering the crystal first.)

Gene - Glad you found the information helpful. As for the crystal, you may be able to peek up through the grid holes and see if it's cracked. Chances are it's fine. That avoids ordering extra parts or allows you to order the crystal so you can complete the bulb replacement in one pass. If you are a bit handy, you'll be fine.
As for the bulb, something sticks in my memory that GE put some whopping 250 watt lamp in there which is nuts! Not sure about the exact wattage, however. I used a 50 watt bulb and the illumination is fine. I'd go ahead and replace the bulb because you'll be very happy to see what's going on inside the oven. It helps with speed cook items to monitor progress. The oven's menu does a reasonable job of guessing at the cook times but it's usually 1-2 minutes more than required on salmon, for example.
If you like cornbread, try the Krusteaz Natural Honey Cornbread box mix. Very good flavor. We use margarine to prepare an aluminum pan. On oven bake with metal circular tray set for 350F (not 400F as indicated on the box). Preheat the oven according to its cycle. Slip it in and cook for 22 minutes. Cut it up and enjoy. We're at 6,500 feet and haven't followed the high altitude recipe indicated for those above 5,000 feet. It seems to come out fine.
Here's an odd one. From time to time we get a fly buzzing in through the door. They are tough to catch and dispose of and spraying insect killer around just isn't indicated. We see them on the TV screen at night during bright scenes. This spawned an idea. To eliminate them, we turn all the lights out except for the oven light. Door open of course. Within a few minutes they'll buzz in. Close the door, go to microwave, remove carcass and the job is done. Works every time.
Sorry for the touch of sarcasm in my titles and write-ups. It's an east coast humor thing which I grew up with. Just can't shake it. Food, humor and music are some of the best things in life.

Might I suggest you look on the "links" section of the CC group under "Advantium Lightbulb Replacement". Herb does a great job in pictures and description on how to replace the bulb. It isn't a 2 hour job. I did it in about 20 minutes. Also, don't get a 50 watt bulb as suggested by one poster - GE actually had a 20 watt, 130 volt bulb in there initially. I used a 25 watt, 120 volt replacement bulb and it works perfectly. Make sure you get a G8 base, not a T8 base.

Martin - Thanks for the additional information. I'm the poster you are referring to. Just for the record, I didn't say it's a 2 hour job. I said it took me 2 hours for the circumstances mentioned. My write up is simply one person's adventure (and impressions) about a routine maintenance task. The point being, I think GE dropped the ball on this aspect of their oven. The information I presented goes beyond a simple bulb replacement and discusses the crystal and cleaning. Important points I think for some users of that oven. In my case, a reasonable amount of time was spent trying to clean trapped grease, dust, dirt and crap out of internal compartments. I may be someone whose productivity is challenged. Again just my 2 cents.
And what's wrong with a 50 watt bulb if one needs more light? Did GE place restrictions on wattages? A point I missed, perhaps. The bulb's socket is porcelain, clip is metal and the wiring is all high temperature. During a baking cycle at 450F with nothing more than un-insulated 20 gauge sheet metal between the oven's compartment and the bulb I doubt bulb heating is an issue. Just curious what your thoughts are on this. If I missed something or left out an important detail I'll make the necessary changes.
