Fuel gauge has retired and prevents generator from starting on 2000

On a recent trip we pulled over to the side of the road to investigate why the dash a/c had stopped blowing air when right before my eyes the fuel gauge slowly went from an accurate "full" reading all the way to "empty" over the course of about 5 seconds. As a result of the false "empty" reading I assume a signal is being sent to the onan generator not to start and consume fuel the coach now believes it cannot spare. With the chassis ignition in the off position the generator still starts and runs just fine. I am baffled as to why the fuel gauge took 5 seconds to gradually and gently move from a reading of "full" all the way to "empty". Anyone else have any ides?

Protocol is to State your name, coach model year and serial number. What has your dash air got to do with the generator not running. Dash air comes from the A/C compressor on the engine and fan system tied to the ignition only. I am not aware of ANY coach that has an interlock between the dash fuel gauge and ability to start/run the generator. The generator runs with the coach parked and no power to the fuel gauge. The generator runs the roof air. Normally the generator fuel intake is approximately 1/4 to 1/8 the height of the fuel tank from the bottom of the tank, so that the generator does not run the coach out of fuel. If the ignition was on and the fuel gauge dropped from full to empty in 5 seconds, you most likely have a ground problem, or a supply voltage problem to the gauge. You could also have a fuse on the dash air failed, on a bad ignition switch. Lots of variables involved here to trouble shoot.

I had a similar experience.

If your coach is like mine, the fuel gauge sending unit is a float with a resistance pot on it.
If that pot fails open (as mine did) the gauge will show empty and the electrical switch controlling the genset will not let it run.
You can look in the door that gives you access to the fuel tank and see the connections to the sending unit.
If you short (connect) the two wires together the gauge will show full and the genset will run.
