Headlight Adjustment

Yahoo Message Number: 83613
We have had our Allure for just over a year now and whilst this might sound odd we have not had occassion to drive at night! Well we did yesterday and I could have seen better with a handheld maglight! The PO had installed xenon fittings but whilst they were bright in their own right the setting was way too low and the spread incorrect. I noted that at the back of the light units (extended the generator slide to view)have spirit bubbles and I am trying to identify the process for getting these lights set correctly. The bubbles at the moment are not at centre. So to adjust them one has to extend the gen slide which puts the lights in a non driving position?

Comments and advice appreciated.

Hi Michael,

We had this exact problem, only we found out the night we brought our new coach home from the dealership!
The lights were horribly misaligned and only illumintated about 3 feet in front of the coach. It was a scary ride home.
We did adjust them with the generator access slide out. On the wall of the storage area we picked a spot we felt the light should be aligned with. Made the adjustments, then drove around the storage facility to check out our work. It took a couple of adjustments. When we felt we had them correct we went out on I-95 for a short ride - they again needed some adjustment but we were eventually able to get them to an acceptable level.

I will send you an email with our phone number if you would like to talk to Scott about the whole procedure.

The electrical design supplying voltage to the lights is typically very poor, especially, I think, on CCs. The lights get weak voltage Anne are very dim. Friend with SOB installed relay (s) in his headlight system and they are twice as bright as what they used to be. We are going to do the same thing on my coach this winter. Well proved more information when complete.

Larry,

Where does the relay pick up the supply voltage to give a higher voltage to the lights? Does this involve running another wire to the battery?

Not sure yet, but there are some large battery wires in the electrical bay under the driver's seat that look like candidates for tapping into .

Has anyone tried just swapping out the bulbs for a brigther bulb? Perhaps the Extreme's from Phillips? Or others?
On my short list is to 'do something about the lack of lighting for night driving'... I polish and UV protect the headlights about every three months, and it helps some.
Larry - Please share your approach and results on the relay's, as that might pave the way for many of us with Allures/Intrigues of the Bronco Headlight era.

I don't have my wiring schematic in front of me but will look next time I am on the coach and have time. However, I can't imagine that our coaches don't use relays for headlights. If not, the vull power for all running lights and head lights goes through the headlight switch in your coach.
If I am wrong, and relays are added, the power would not have to come all the way from the battery. The electric bay under the driver has both always hot and ignition switched power appropriate for the headlight application.

The responses which relate to brightness of the actual bulbs are not on the right track for my query; As I have said the bulbs (now Xenon so those with yellow light might want to investigate) are fine, it is the alignment and spread. I have been fortunate, as is the benefit of this list, to have had a telephone conversation with Scott who experienced the same phenomenon and as a result will try the adjustments he has suggested. What a great list this is! I am in the UK and there is nothing like this group, the UK forums are at best a waste of time, at worst are just full of puerile responses, so I do not bother.

Hi Michael - Agree, a very special group!
Yeah, we strayed from pure adjustment, but it does tie in with the theme related to night light vision. Very possible the newer coaches do not have a problem that adjustment will not cure.
My adjustment is good. I'm keeping the plastic Bronco headlights from our era coaches polished clear from being cloudy. Still very poor light projection.
If Larry is onto a solution, or someone has had good results changing bulbs - it might help a subset of this group.

Glad Scott was able to talk you thru some tuning on your lights!

Best to all,

Above is a link to procedure for installing a relay into the headlight wiring To cure the dim-headlight problem that so many SOB and CC owners complain about. I haven't studied the CC wiring yet, but assume this is the reason i have dim headlights. I saw the before and after results on my friend's Beaver and it was like the difference between night and day.

It is a common practice to upgrade the wiring on the headlights. Larger wire carries more current and has less resistance which equals brighter light. On a vehicle it is common to run directly from the battery thru the relay power side to the lights. On a motor home that may not make sense. I am interested in what size wire comes to the front of the coach that one could tie into. I also need to tackle the headlights on our coach although I try not to travel past happy hour.
