Got myself confused, again. One 8D Powerstride Starter Battery?

Hi Gang,

Seeing some of the great pictures of the battery area in many of your coaches. Starting back about a year ago with Dallas's coach. I added a future 'to do' to my list to expand my boon docking capacity.
I've started researching the coach & chassis battery options. I plan on AGM's (have two Deka 8D AGM's now as the coach battery) for the coach duty. Have not decided on which ones yet, and how many. When I did some surfing on some other boards about chassis battery to support ISL's. Most indicated they had two chassis batteries? Not sure what battery types, as that was not spelled out. Our coach came with one Powerstride 8D wet cell. (Both the coach & chassis batteries were replaced a few years before we bought the coach. So going on 5 two 6 years of age now. With no signs of problems.)
We do not intend to do North Pole camping, but I was wondering how many chassis batteries you had in your coaches? What group type? I'm thinking either maintenance free or AGM for the chassis battery, just for the benefit of non gassing. Should not cycle down/up as often as the chassis coach battery, so thinking the maintenance free would cover me well and not cost as much. Just wondering if one 8D is the norm for ISL's?
In the planning stages now, so as I measure everything out to see what will fit, was looking for insight.

TIA,
Smitty

Smitty,

One 8D is the norm for the ISL. I think your idea of an AGM chassis battery is a good one. I think that you could easily build a rack above your current battery storage of three 8Ds. On that rack you could certainly add one additional house 8D and perhaps two of them. That would increase the house reserve by 50% to 100%. In that configuration you would have to have AGM for all as your access for maintenance would be difficult.
Another way to go is with taller 6VDC batteries for the house. Most manufacturers have L16 batts which are 17 inch tall 6 volts at 440 amp hours. You could fit as many as three pairs for a total 1,320 amp hours in place of the 500 you have now.
One of those options was my plan with my '04 Allure before I swapped for my current Magna.

Good luck.

Anyone know where the fuses are in a 97 Prevost bus for the Link 2000s?

Smitty,

I maxed out the battery bay because I wanted the extra capacity for those "just in case" times. You've seen my photo already I'm sure. The challenge was rearranging the wires on the right which CC didn't really run with a great deal of foresight. The poor wire arrangement meant a lost battery position. I made a special wire loom to hold all the cables up high and out of the way. Lifeline AGM batteries are smooth on top and reasonably low profile for 8D group size. They fit under the wires fine. Although tight, no access is required given they don't need any maintenance. I used 2 group 31 Odyssey units for the chassis. I dumped my Deka's a long time ago owing to failures. Upgraded to a pure sine wave inverter as well. As for the extra capacity, I've not had to use it yet. Peace of mind, however, is worth something for some of us.

A couple of years ago I searched for the strongest CCA 8D battery to start my ISL. Cat's 8D maintenance free battery had the most CCAs than any other battery I could find. So i went to a Cat service center and picked one up. I'm not close to coach and can't remember the CCAs.

My aftermarket install has one fuse on the red 16g wire at the positive terminal of the house battery. That seems to be common to the link 2000 meter when monitoring two battery banks. The manual is available online.
