Intermittent High Beam Headlight Failure

Hi All,

I have a very annoying problem that I have been unable to diagnose and hoping someone from the group may have an answer. I have a 2007 Allure, 470 with a Cummins ISL. My high beam headlights will not function. Here is the diagnosis to date. I had a shop in town work on the high beams and they functioned for a while. I have installed a new turn signal switch because I thought that might be the problem. The high beams works for a while and now have stopped. When you activate the high beam switch, the blue indicator light on the dash turns blue, the headlights go out expecting the high beams to come on. I have checked the bulbs and they all function. I have checked for power at the plug in to the light and there is none. I have looked for fuses or breakers for high beams and can not find one. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have scratched my head long enough on this one and could sure use some help.

David,

Your headlight functions are tied to the Smart wheel controller under the dash. You might check there for problems.

Something you might give a try;

Turn on your headlights and make sure the hi-beams are on (blue light on the dash is on). I realize you have no headlights at this time.

Turn the headlights off.

Turn on the ignition, no need to start the engine.
Push the headlight flash button on the steering wheel (top button on the left side).

The blue light should come on, on the dash.
If so did the headlights come on also (should be the hi-beams if they did come on)?

Hi Barney,

Thanks for the comments. I had talked to the people at smart wheel previously and they said they did not control the high beams and their unit had nothing to do with my problem. I am a little suspect of that answer. I will tray the smart wheel button tonight when I get home from work. Thanks for the comment and I will let you know what I find.

Not ask to obvious, but are the high beam filaments in the bulbs good? The easy way to check is activate the high beams them measure the voltage at the headlights. If there is not voltage, then most likely it is the headlight relay.

I tried that this evening. It worked a couple of times. The blue light on the dash came on but not the headlights. I tried it a few times and it stopped working. I turned the key on and off, it worked a couple of times then stopped working. Do you think that indicates the smart wheel module mounted under the steering column has a problem?
Any ideas on how to check for a problem? Is it possible that it is a bad wire or more likely a bad module?

Hi Mikee,

Good question. I have checked voltage at the plug into the light bulb, no volts on the high beam terminal. Voltage at the low beams and running lights.

Other ideas greatly appreciated.

Your wont like this but it sounds like the hi/low switch on the steering column. I will do a little research tomorrow morning. You can install a temporary jumper bypassing the hi/low switch. I'll see if I can figure out which wires to connect to get this done. It will confirm if the switch is the problem.
Any chance the headlight bulbs have been replaced with a high output bulb? This could place too much current on the switch causing it to overheat.
I'll get back to you tomorrow.

Sounds like the headlight or high beam relay. It is most likely a "87a" relay. Not sure of the location, but that would be the first thing I would check.

I tend to agree with Mikee, I think the VIP controller and hi/lo switch are OK. I don't believe there is a High beam relay. I think both Hi and Low beams use the same relay.
I believe you have the Daytime Running Lights (DRL) as my 07 Inspire does. These are the High Beams running at a reduced brightness when the headlights are not on. Let's test them and see if they are working.

Block a wheel so the coach doesn't decide to roll away on you.

As before, turn on the ignition but no need to start the engine.
Release the parking brake and the DLR lights should come on. If it's during daylight hours they may be hard to see so you need to get you eyes down to the headlight level.
I haven't been able to find any information as to how this module is wired into the system but I have contacted the manufacturer to see if I can get that info. I've attached a link to a picture of the DRL module.

Hi John,

Thanks for the information. I contacted them today and they gave me what each wire is assigned to on J2. I will get out the volt tester this weekend and try to see if the module may be bad.
Thanks so much to all of you for the advice. FYI my DRL lights do work. I have not seen the relay you showed a picture of. I will look for that in my bay and try to see if that is working .

Will update as soon as i try the test.

Thanks for all of the input. I changed out the headlight relay and that seems to have fixed the problem. I will wait and see if the lights continue to work. Thanks again for all the input.
