California triip

I am planning a trip for late May starting in Houston, TX ? north to I40.
Take I40 to Albuquerque, NM. to Flagstaff, AZ. to Barstow, CA. then hwy 58 to Bakersfield, CA.
Would like comments on this rout, or should I just take I10.
I will be in a 40fter pulling a car.

I would do anything to avoid LA, California, but then I'm not fond of driving thru Dallas. So I suppose I would go to Fredericksburg, the first day. Its a great place. The stretch between there and El Paso, is long but fast with an 80 mph speed limit. So I would head directly for Albuquerque from Fredericksburg. Its flat nothing and you can only average about 50 mph; but, once you get close to San Angelo its easy sailing to Roswell, Clines Corners and to Albuquerque. I don't know how it is now days but every time I filled with Diesel in Roswell, it was cheap, but the performance was terrible, so buyer beware.

I just traveled I-40 from Arkansas to Bakersfield via Hwy 58. I-40 from Flagstaff to Kingman is absolutely terrible. Rough and unable to do more than 40 MPH. Even at that speed it seemed like the Motor Home was being shaken to pieces. It has been a few years since I traveled I-10 but I would try try I-10 instead.

I do everything I can to avoid the interstates. However,
I would take I-10 west to I-8, just south of Casa Grande, AZ (to avoid Phoenix). > West on I-8 to SR 85 north to I-10. > West on I-10 to m/p 45, fuel at ZIP.
North on Vicksburg Hwy, SR 72 to Parker, AZ. > West on SR 62 to Vidal Junction, > North on Calif. SR 95 to I-40 W. > then west to pick up SR 58 to Bakersfield.

The I-40 and Hwy 58 in California are a good choice. You could take Hwy 95 North from Blythe and hit I-40 at Needles and continue West from there. I have not been on this stretch of road so I cannot say if it's a good choice or not.

You could also take the 210 at Redlands to the I-15, up over the mountains then Hwy 395 to Hwy 58 then West. The road surface on Hwy 395 is OK but it's only a 2 lane road for quite a few miles. Or you could stay on the I-15 to Barstow and catch Hwy 58 there. This would add about 20 miles +/- but it's a better choice in my mind. Very little 2 lane with this route.

Living in So. Cal, I would go well out of my way to stay off the I-10 and I-5 in the So. Cal area. The roads are OK but the traffic can be very unpredictable and could possibly add hours to your trip.

I've done this trip several times from Tucson. 95from Blythe to I40 is two lane and rough in places. My preferred route is I10 to the loop 101 west of Phoenix north to 93 to Kingman then I40 to 58. It's a little slow from 101 to to Wickenburg, AZ but after that it is an excellent highway to I40. Good stop east of 10 miles east of Kingman is Blake's Ranch RV. As for the pull thru's on the upper level.
Eveyone has their preferred route this happens to be ours.

CA 58 is a fine route. Whilst going that way, you might want to stop in Boron (for the local museum), Mojave (to get fuel and find out what those winds are all about), Tehachapi (with a nice RV park, Mountain Valley Airport RV park, up the hill from the main drag, and alongside the grass runway for gliders and their tow planes), and the vegetable and fruit stand at the bottom of the hill westbound.
But surely your sights can be set higher than Bakersfield!;-) It's sort of Galveston without the charm. There are wonderful and interesting things to be seen west of Bakersfield. Way west.

I was glad to spot this post citing the terrible condition of 40 from Flagstaff to Kingman. We are presently in Tucson and will be headed to Cottonwood next week to take in Sedona and environs... and then from there we go on to Vegas. The obvious route, looking at the maps would be to simply travel over to Prescott and up 89 to 40 and from there over thru Seligman over to Kingman and then north to Vegas. But from what you are saying, I wonder if a better bet would be to head back south to Phoenix area from Cottonwood then up 93 to 40 about 20 miles east of Kingman, drive into Kingman and then continue up 93 to Vegas - this extends the drive about 80 miles. Or should we consider skipping I-40 entirely and really take the long route, back down to Phoneix, over 10 to Blythe and then up CA 95 to Vegas... this adds 170 miles to the original route... a helluva premium to avoid I-40... and of course one has to wonder about the condition of CA 95 which is a long 215 miles by itself. Anyone have an experience to share on this trip? Thanks in advance!
