Mattress Change-out!

Yahoo Message Number: 86168
Hello Group:

Either that original mattress is getting older or we are! It is not comfortable anymore. So, we have ordered a Select Comfort Air Mattress from Camping World to be installed the first day of the FMCA Rally at Lazy Days here in Tucson.

Questions:
1. Where do you put the compressor on a 2006 Allure? There are no nightstands on either side of the bed.

2. Someone posted: "Be sure to let the air out when going over high elevations"? How high is high?
3. We currently have a 4-inch memory foam topper. Do you use that on top of a Sleep Comfort Mattress?

Need to know!

I guess you are set on an air mattress... frankly I wouldn't have one... lots of negatives all been mentioned before. But I was at Quartzsite recently and laid down on a Denver Mattress Euro with the pillow top

Most comfortable mattress I have laid on in a long time, only $700 for a narrow king (72" wide as opposed to the full 76" wide king) ideal for a motorhome and it rolls up in a vacuum pack roll for easy shipping and easy to get into the coach. We are going to one soon ourselves

I don't know what your under-bed area looks like, but if you can fit something a little smaller than the size of a toaster under your bed, that's the place for the compressor.
I always let some air out of my mattress if I will be climbing more than 500 feet in elevation. It is easy to do this and then pump it back up at your destination. If you don't release some pressure, there is a chance that your mattress will pop like an over inflated balloon!
I would not use memory foam on the Select Comfort air mattress. I suppose you could do so, but I think it will defeat the purpose of the air mattress.

We love our select comfort. Got one for the house too. Nice to have 20 different settings to find your perfect comfort level. Yes, they are basically an air mattress, but sometimes the simple design work best. We put the air pump under the bed. Sleep in comfort...

We moved our full length queen Select Confort mattress from our 99 Magna to our new to us 06 Affinity on Tuesday. I had to lengthen the hoses by splicing a new piece of hose into the original hoses. And put it under the bed frame so that it is not in the way when the slide comes in. When we get home I think we will secure it under the bed with two or three straps but for now I think it will be fine. The wood under the bed doesn't quite sit on the floor so I ran the hoses beside the mattress and then under the bed between the floor and the wood.
We also have a temporpedic topper n it and it sleeps great! Firm but soft and cozy.
As far as the mountains go they are probably right if you had it filled to the max with out your body weight but the numbers you get are on the remote are with you in the bed so unless you have it set on 100 and got to the top of Pikes Peak you will probably be ok.

1. In our 2006 Allure, the compressor fits between the side of the mattress and the side wall of the slide.
2. We live at sea level, so we always let air out before going over the Cajon Pass (4,000 ft) or The Grapevine, or up to Big Bear Lake. It is a safety precaution, and you will be amazed at how much the bed changes when changing altitude by a couple of thousand feet. On the day we are pulling out we just let some air out ( down to 40 lbs) before we pack up the rig, no big deal.
3. We have a 3" memory foam pad on top of the Select Comfort to provide a little bit of cushion for shoulders.
4. Enjoy it

There is a decrease in OUTSIDE pressure as you go higher. The pressure INSIDE the mattress remains the same. The difference in these pressures increases, which causes the mattress to expand like an inflated balloon. This is what can cause a mattress failure. The remedy is to let air put of the mattress before you ascend.
