50 Amp Winder

Yahoo Message Number: 86510
The last time I rolled up the electrical cord, I was unable to get the cord winder to take the last 5 feet or so. The handle would turn without winding up the cord. At this time I concerned that if I roll out the cord and something is broken inside I will not be able to wind up any of the cord back in. Has anyone had any type of similiar problem? Does anyone know how the winder works prior to me taking it apart?
Thanks

Dave

Dave,

My cord reel stopped winding shortly after I bought my coach. It's riveted together with pop rivets. You will have to drill them out to get it apart. In mine, the screws that hold the drive plate to the reel had come off. I replaced the screws, a hardware store item, with new screws with self locking nuts. I haven't had a problem since. When you dis-assemble the unit the power transfer brushes will come out. You may want to carefully re-surface them and clean up the rotor. This will ensure good power transfer through your reel. It's all pretty straight forward, I suggest you go for it. Just don't forget to power off your coach before beginning the work.

Ron,

I do not have the power winder. Mine is the manual type. I turn a handle that causes the drum unit to turn and it winds up the cord. I can not disagree that something has come loose or broke inside. guess I just have to tear it apart and see what I need to do to repair it. Thanks for the info

Your roller is probably slipping. There is a tension adjuster on the roller. Go inside the coach and remove the cover and adjust the roller tension. Mine is a carpeted box in the bedroom wardrobe. Screws can be a little hard to find in the carpet.

Dave,

Call the company, they know that some of the units were defective right from the factory.
I had the same thing happen to me and they sent me an entire new unit including the cord. They also paid the shipping to send my old cord back. I was staying at ODR Newport, Oregon at the time and everyone there wanted my old cord which I could not do.
Based on the age of your reel they may not send you a new one, however they probably will have some insight on the best way to fix what you have.
