Cat-9 Engine

Yahoo Message Number: 87389
I have a Caterpillar C-9 Engine. My 1st year the check engine light came on over 100 times and finally the number 5 fuel injector and a fuel pump were replaced. 4000 miles ago(14250 miles on the coach) the light came on again and the code showed a problem with the regen system but it passed all the tests and the code was cleared by the dealer. The light has come on yet once again at 18250 miles on the coach. This engine has never de-rated itself but I am getting pretty disheartened just waiting for this check engine light to ruin my day. Presently I am in Tucson, Az and headed to Las Cruces, New Mexico. I will be at the CCFI rally at Buckhorn in the middle of May. Does anyone have any ideas or know any Caterpillar magicians who might help me out here. Thanks,

Just stay a way from the Cat people in El Paso, all they know how to work on are earth movers, bull dozers and scoop loaders. I don't know about the independents. TWI 2004 INTRIGUE 11731 with a ISL

You mentioned 'dealer', has a CAT shop looked into this? If not, probably the next move. You might also check in with iRV2 CAT forum, a good group.

Best of luck, and please let us know how it works out.

Al, I recommend FRITZTOWN DIESEL in Fredericksburg, TX. They are 30 minutes from Buckhorn Lake Resort in Kerrville.
They have great knowledge of Cat, Cummins & Detroit engines and the ability to hookup to your engine with the Cat Software to diagnose. They have done a bunch on my Cummins and other Country Coach Owners rigs.
Owners are John Fox & Sam Crenwelge, address 199 FM 2093, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, Ph: 830-997-5093, you need to call ahead for an appt.
From Buckhorn go East on I-10 to Exit 508 (Hwy 16) go North on 16 20 miles to FM 2093 (Shell Station on left), turn left on FM 2093 go 200 yards on Left is FRITZTOWN DIESEL. I can take this post of your condition to them if you wish.

Ken Retired Cat Tech, Friend a good cat tech with his Laptop and Cat Comm adapter again should be able to find the issues. When you get the other Tech on board make him or her aware the do a Cat software update and in my case a paper print out of programed paramiters before and after! The last couple of years I worked the C-9 to me is a great powerhouse but then still newer build issues were found and repaired! Always a flag when fuel injector and pump fail together! I often wish I belonged to this group when working had lots of help from the Right People! Keep all your paperwork so the next tech can use this for fuel to further resolve your issue! Please keep us posted. I had a lot of leaking fuel fittings or air entering the complete fuel system like sand cracks in housings causing problems down the road as engine hours became higher in numbers! The Cat Regen system is another Issue. Also have them check for engine TIB's for your build Keep us posted Ken 99 Allure 30356.

Thanks to all for the input. I think I will head to Texas and Fritztown Diesel. Thanks again. If you are going to the rally see you there.

Sounds like the shop in Fredericksburg is good. We also have a Cat dealer here in San Antonio--Holt Caterpillar. I've used them for engine service, and they have done a good job. But it's another 70 miles down the road from Buckhorn.
