Opinions; the best RV radio/navigation/rear camera or just use indep

Yahoo Message Number: 88291
Hello out there,

I am considering installing a new radio/navigation/rear camera system in our coach. I had the old JVC unit with discs but changed it out for a simple radio/camera system without navigation. I was just going to use my iphone navigation. This did not work well and really not very convenient so...I will need to buy a new all in one system with radio, camera and NAV or just buy a separate dash style navigation system (like a Garmin etc.). The all in ones I am looking at are the AVIC Pioneer 850 or the AVIC Alpine 920. Any opinions on which way to go with this - is there a really good "all in one" or just a navigation system that is geared for or at least a very RV friendly one? Thanks
Michael D

I've always been of the opinion that combining too many tasks on a single device leads to very diminished returns. Remember the toaster with the radio. I'm a firm believer in not combining technology that changes slowly with technology that changes rapidly. In this case, gps navigation units are changing and improving on a 2 year basis and if you buy an all in one you may be limiting yourself to staying with old technology.
I just bought a Garmin DEZL 760LMT gps. It is replacing the Rand McNally RVND 5510 unit I bought when it first came out. Prior to that I used a Tom Tom and before that a navigation program running on a pocket pc. Each upgrade has given me more capability and for me each is a better navigator than the previous one.

We also use our iPad with "Copilot Live". I have a stand for it that sits it up where we both can see it driving down the road. I like being able to leave the backup camera up as well. Copilot has a traffic add on. I has been pretty accurate (except when i had it in wifi mode!?! We have been using this combo for 2 years and both have performed well.

We just replaced our camera system and are very pleased with the new set up. We have four cameras, all with night vision. Our screen can show all four at once or be set to be just back up only with the side cameras activating when you turn on the directional signals. The nose camera is wonderful for parking and for busy bumper to bumper traffic. You can see exactly how close you are to any object front back and side. At night we leave the cameras on and can see all around the coach from the entry to the back bumper. We feel safer driving or parking. We went with a hard wired system which minimizes any interference. We put in blue tooth with our stereo and navigation system. We have Sirius along with the AM FM which we like a lot, and cd. My wife has a remote control so she can change the station or volume or program the nav. We also back up the nave with Map quest on the I pad.

After your posts I did a little more research - the Garmin Dezyl 760lmt, was getting the best reviews. We considered the Rand Mc 7710. Since we use the "Allstays" Camp and RV app on our iPad mini for RV parks and info - great little program - we didn't need a lot of the RV camping info anyway. The Garmin has the important Truck/RV settings and it was getting reviewed as more stable than the Rand ...and it has voice recognition! We're definitely leaning towards the Garmin.

Monty,

Inquiring minds would like to know what brand/model system did you buy?

+1!

I actually us the ipad mini...perfect size and the device covers a whole host of other uses. I don't think I would ever go back to a single use gps for navigation.

Are the ipads/tablets hard to see in the sun or at angles while mounted in the coach? I have a Nexus7 tablet which I need to find a mount for. TIA
