Dead in the water in Emporium, VA

Well our 1st long trip is not starting out well, in fact it's turned into a disaster. My batteries were not charging yesterday while traveling through NC in torrential rain, and it got so bad that I had to turn off everything (wipers, AC, headlights etc.) to keep the coach running. Called Good Sam roadside and they sent me to King's truck & Auto (some guy living in a trailer out in the middle of nowhere with a set of tools) who promptly assesed the problem a a bad alternator and went "into town" and got a new part. Once the alternator was installed I started the engine and the voltage looked normal again so I turned on the wipers and immediatly the engine died and I lost everything since all of the selenoids popped in the battery bay.
Six hours later I was ($615 lighter) we were towed to Emporium, VA (O'Berry service center) where I am now sitting. If O'Berry cannot fix the problem does anyone know of a reputable service center in the Richmond area? Looks like 4th of July in Colonial Williamsburg isn't going to happen for us.

I believe Cummins has a coach care facility there but I have never used them. Did someone check your battery, sounds like that could be a problem which should be checked.

Cummins has a place in Richmond but not Coach Care. Nearest Coach Care is in Roanoke about 3 hours away. I checked RV Service Reviews and Cheek and Shockley in Richmond got excellent reviews (3).

Last September my alternator quit when I left Montana to come home to California. I'm on Kevin Waite's service plan so I called Butch Williams (thats how it works. Kevin collects the money and Butch does all the work :-))) ) and he had me run my generator across Idaho and Nevada to Reno where I was able to get in to Rocky Mountain Cummins. The generator kept the batteries charged enough to keep the coach running the 7 hours I needed to get there. Kept me from being towed.

Hi John,

Sorry to hear you are having a rough start!!! Hang in their, as sorting out some of the issues now, will pave the way to future enjoyment...
I do not know of any shops to recommend, as I've never been to the area. Besides the input so far here, also might want to check RV Service Review for the area.
Best of luck to you, and fire works are fire works no matter where you are:)! (I know, not what you wanted...), Smitty

Thanks everyone for your support we are back on the road after 2 days and 1 night in Emporium, VA. The original service provider (Good Sam recommended) King Truck did not know what he was doing, and installed an alternator incorrectly that led to the problems. O'Berrys service center in Emporium knew how to work on RV's and diagnosed the problem (80 amp sol) and had us back on the road by 4 PM.

Now a new issue: when I was towed last night, they had to put the air connection under the coach directly on the bag (since the coach was dead there was no ignition to turn on) and now I seem to have a very bad ride and actually think I bottomed out at one point. Is there a way to check if my ride high is working (travel mode is working)?
