First RV trip to Colorado

Yahoo Message Number: 89435
Taking a trip to Steamboat end of July going thur Little Rock, Oklahoma City, Santa Fe, would like to leave Santa Fe and take 285 thur Buena Vista, Leadville, Dillon, Steamboat. Is this a good route or would there be a better route prefer not to take I-25.

Thanks for any input,

We have taken that same trip between Santa Fe and Dillon, and will be doing so again in a few days (leaving Tucson today). When you get to Dillon, seriously consider staying at the boat ramp at Pine Cove Campground at Lake Dillon. It's closed to boats now, because of the need to inspect every boat that goes on the lake, and they are not staffed to do it there. It's dry camping (ten minute drive to a dump station) right on the edge of the lake. I don't know how low the lake is now, but it's still a good place to go. It's a National Forest with an old geezers discount- I think it's called the Golden Age Passport- probably less than 10 bucks a night.

We have stayed at the Trailer Ranch RV Resort several times. It is an over 50 RV Resort with about 25 spaces. It Is closer to town and nice people. Not many amenities.
The other RV park is Santa Fe Skies RV Park south of town and a little further out. It is up on a hill and has nicer views. The spaces are gravel and not paved.

You will love Santa Fe.

Suggest you consider a side trip to Chama, about 106 miles north of Santa Fe. With reservations you can ride the train and I recommend the Rio Chama RV Park within walking distance of the RR. It is situated near a stream, with stream side sites available, in a beautiful tree shaded park.

Dinner for Two has great food (cuisine) and reasonable prices. The Chef/Owner trained at the Culinary Institute of America in NY and does the cooking. His parents oversee the dining room.
The Pantry is a great local casual restaurant. Open all day, great breakfasts too. Lots of local eat there.
Geronimo's is a wonderful dining experience. Its beautiful, has divine food and service but expect to pay for it. With wine, two people will spend over $200.

Tom, when you get here to Santa Fe Skies come see me in site Z2. We'll give you a CD with months worth of things to do in SF. We're here for July and August every year.
