Quick question for anyone that has used Bus-Kote. Was your roof powdery, white streaks etc? Did you use "Bond-It" prior to applying the Bus-Kote and did you use the clear that the company recommends?Any info on this would be great ! Thanks, Bruce & Steffi

No.

Did you use "Bond-It" prior to applying the Bus-Kote and did you use the clear that the company recommends?

Used the primer and clear from the supplier.

Bruce & Steffi,

I have applied Bus Kote to two coaches & have been very pleased with the results--no more white streaks down the sides & I do feel it keeps the coach cooler. I cleaned the roof thoroughly and applied 1 coat of the Bond-it. It probably would not be a bad idea to rough up the roof a little with sandpaper although I did not do this & it seems to adhere well. I then applied 3 coats of Bus Kote & finally 2 coats of clear coat. I think the clear coat is necessary to seal the Bus Kote and prolong its life. Every few years renew with a coat of the clear. Someone recently suggested mixing in some "anti-skid" material into the clear coat which sounds like a pretty good idea to me to prevent slipping when you're on the roof.

Good Luck,

Hi Bruce & Steffi,

I have not used it yet but I did do some research. Per the manufacturer's spec sheet, it states in order to qualify for the 7 year warranty, you have to apply the Bus-Prime sealer first and then two coats of Bus-Kote. Per their spec sheet, this should be good for 7 years and if doesn't, I guess you can submit a warranty claim to them.

You folks that had chalking and did the Bus Kote.....were you using anything else on your roof before doing Bus Kote? I am planning to do an application of 303 Protectant at least twice per year and hope that will keep the roof in good shape. It worked on the 11 year old Winnebago I traded on the Allure.

Last year I coated my roof using Sherwin-Williams Sher-Cryl HPA.
I first washed the roof using Mothers automotive car wash one that does NOT contain any wax. I scrubbed it using a coarse Scotch Bright pad attached to a pole sander to remove all the chalking and provide an anchor pattern. after letting it dry for three days I applied a coat of Sherwin-Williams Sher-Cryl HPA. My white streaking is gone, the Sher-Cryl is easy to apply, looks great and adheres like great. I could not be happier with the result.

Three years ago I painted the flat parts of the roof (from what used to be the clearcoat line) with regular white exteriorhouse paint. Worked quite well. Just washed the roof and put the paint on. Only streaks are from where the clear coat used to be.

For just chalking control. Regular (key word is regular, at least twice a year) maintenance will control the chalking. Bus-kote also does this, but it's real value is in cooling, and a bit more sound proofing.
Establish a baseline on your roof. A good All-In-One light compound and wax combination, applied with a buffer, will both clean off light oxidation and wax at the same time. I like the Zaino AO1 (All In One) product. But TR3, Eagle One, etc. all make combination cleaner and wax products. I would then go over whatever you use with a coat of Aerospace 303. Then if you do normal washing of the roof in between, let it dry, and hit it again with the 303. A simple stand up sponge floor mop, spay on, spread around, saves the backs and the knees when applying the 303.
I think I'm going with the Bus-kote, though I have no doubt the boat decking paints, and other mentioned paints with clear coats would also do well.
One other factor for me, is that I'm about to add a new Solar Panel system. So much of the cooling and sound proofing of the Bus-kote, will be covered by the solar panels shielding of the rrof. I've already decided to also place one of these panels over the shower skylight, and we'll see how that goes. May add a coat of Bus-kote to the skylight in the future too.

Best of luck on your roof protection control! Smitty

May I ask, why you are replacing your solar panels. I have 4 and they are 19 years old and still working properly. I am not full time. Thank you, Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111 --------

They may be working, but after 19 years the output has fallen. Panels usually have a 20 year max life. At least with the current technology. The are not real efficient when new so as they deteriorate the output falls.

In my case, the Solar Panels were put on by the previous owner. Two 110 Watt panels, with undersize wire and a controller that is now known to be less then stellar:)!
It does an OK job on keeping the batteries topped off while in storage, but is not robust enough to cover more full time/boon docking plans we have ahead. Another factor is the Controller is not programmable for Lifeline AGM's, and the float mode is too high, so it has to go either way.
These panels are about 10 years old, but still working well. But, they take up so much of the real estate of the roof, that they are in the way of my being able to add the 4 to 5 new panels. (Going with the Panasonic HIT 240S high voltage panels.) On one of my roof grid layouts, I have room for one of them in a different location. I'm a stereo buff, and I'm thinking of adding a separate amp and new Focal speakers for travel mode, driven off of the in dash CD unit. If I do this, I'll add one more 12V battery to separately run the amp. I would use the old panel and Controller, to charge this battery. Either way, I'll retain these two panels at home, so I want to use them I have them. Last factor, is we have a place at Park of The Sierra's outside of Yosemite. The space we have is shaded pretty heavy from the Southern Sun. I do one spot on our space that has good sun exposure, so I could also use these to augment the roof panels when 'in camp' for awhile:)!

At 10 years old, they have some life in them.

Best to all,
Smitty
