Southeast Travel Recommendations

Early next year, probably February or March, my wife & I are planning to spend some time traveling the Southeast including Florida and possibly the Keys. We will be departing from Dallas TX and are looking for scenic drives, interesting places to visit as well as nice RV parks to stay in. Our interests include hiking, biking, outdoor exploration and sightseeing. We are thinking of doing this in a 4 to 6 week period of time.

I would make sure to see:
1. Tabasco Plant, Avery Island, Louisiana There is a casino rv park at Charenton LA called Cypress Bayou.
2. New Orleans LA

World War II Museum, French Quarter We stayed at Ponchatrain Landing RV park. Don't worry about the route getting there. Once you're there it's very nice.
3. Pensacola, FL

National Naval Aviation Museum, Beaches
4. Destin FL beaches - Geronimo RV Resort - new small park.
5. We like Live Oak Landing RV Park in Freeport FL. Very quiet park under huge oaks. Short drive to beaches.
6. Marianna FL - Florida Caverns State Park or East Bank Corps of Engineers Park. Water and electric only. State Park might be tight for large rig. Caverns are small but worth seeing.
6A - Stephen Foster State Park - White Springs FL.
7. Manatee Springs State Park - Rock Crusher Canyon RV park.
8. Rainbow Springs State Park - Dunnellon FL. Full hookups but you need reservations, especially for weekends.
9. Fort Myers FL - Edison home and museum.
10. Sarasota FL - Ringling home and museum. St Armands for expensive shopping! 11. St Petersburg FL - Fort Desoto State Park.
12. Everglades airboat ride and Native American museum.
13. Keys - margaritas and watch the sun set!! I'm sure I've missed many things.

Be sure you're members of Passport America (1/2 price camping, especially in the Southeast.). Some great sights to see in the Southeast, especially in Florida in the months you plan to travel. Be sure to get reservations when possible because Florida is Snowbird country. There are some barrier islands off the coast of Florida, Ga and South Carolina that are nice to see. Lots of History, etc. Good luck.

I you want to see the "scenic" side of Florida you need to stay off of the interstate (of course). If you travel down the middle of the state on RT 27 you'll experience "old florida". Takes you back to the days of citrus plantations and cattle ranches. There are lots of PA camp grounds along the way.
If traveling along the west coast stick to Tamiamie Trail. It's 260 miles of old Highway 41. The old coastal road before they built I-75. It'll also take you down to the Everglades, as will Rt27. Some of the great places to visit along the way are the keys south of Tampa, Fort Meyers and Naples.

Ron,

I second what Kevin suggested. When I travel I stay off of the Interstates as much as possible and travel mainly the old US Hwy systems or on State routes
The views are fabulous, the small towns are very interesting. Of course it takes more time. Only when I'm in a hurry I use the Interstates. Believe it not you will fine the fuel is a little cheaper using US Highways.
