opinions regarding jump to 45ft fom 40ft

Hi All

We are working towards our update from a 40ft inspire. I have been told by most to stay with the 40ft but when looking at magnas and even intigues there are more 45s then 40s. Can I get your thoughts? If you have a 45 to you wish it were only a 40 or vice versa? It seems to me its only 5 ft but what do I know I have only been running around with the 40.

In March we went from our 38' Magna to our 45' Affinity. I thought it might be a problem but we have traveled over 8000 miles in her so far and with none. I told one friend "its all behind me" when I'm driving down the road. I do know when we go down to Lazy Days in Tampa we may have an issue because most of their spaces are short but up to now we haven't had one. And the extra room inside is GREAT! When we bought our 04 42' Intrigue we also looked at 42' Magnas. The Intrigue had 3 full bays where

the Magna had 2 and 1/2. We ordered our coach with 3 Airs, but had to settle for 2. We had the choice

of a Cumins 400 or a Cat c-12, the Magna had the C-12 or 15 but can't remember. We chose the the

Cummins for local service and their larger network and much higher fuel milage. The Magna has

more bells and whistles and larger Sofas, but much smaller kitchen preparation area. The 45 foot

coaches have less storage under neath than my 42', where I can hall 10,000 lbs and tow 7500 more.

The newer coaches have wider entry's making entry a little easier but taking away from storage

underneath. Some of the 45' coaches can only hold 3500 to 4600 lbs, but can tow closer to 10,000.

The 45' coaches have smaller kitchen counters, but larger sofas. I have a computer desk at the foot of

the Queen bed or could could have had a computer desk up front, but chose two sofas. 45 footers

have either queen , but mostly king beds. The 45's have the taller ceilings later on as do the 40 ft. You can get the Cummins ISM in the 40ft coaches which allows you to use standard diesel without the

special filters and the later diesel with the catalytic convertor and diesel particulate filter. The 40' Magnas weigh about the same as my 42' Intrigue. I go down the road at 40,000 lbs with 5,000 lbs of

capacity to spare with all tanks full. If we stay on the interstates we average about 8.5 mpg at 64 mph.

In the mountains of Colorado, California, or Oregon about 7.8 mpg with my foot to the metal. I like

the 06 and 07 Magnas, but would stay away from the 08 because of the fuel issues, etc. The new fuel

has cost me a new lift pump. Reminds me I had the same issue with my 7.3 liter when Clinton changed

diesel fuel the first time. I prefer the older coaches because the have better lighting inside. The

newer coaches need to have the quartz lamps replaced with LED to gain lumens and reduce heat

generated. You have to decide if you want full tile floors, with Nu-heat . They reduce your carrying

capacity. Good luck on your search, I would check with the RV dealers that support us. Premier

We went from a 36' coach to a 42'. I set my limit at 42 since I have a very tight turn to get into the area where my coach is stored at home. No regrets. If it wasn't for that issue, we may have done the 45' since there are so many from which to choose. Unless you plan to spend a lot of time in state parks, national parks or other public campgrounds where site size is an issue, I don't think having a 45' is going to present many problems.

I made the jump in 2008 to a new 2008 530 45' Intrigue with a tag, from a 40'. The difference was amazing. Drives better, more room, more storage, just plain more conveniences and much lees fatigue when driving. You also don't feel the wind or a large 16 wheeler when on a narrow road, and 4 slides with a heated floor made my wife more comfortable.

By the way, we are just finishing building our new house and have decided to sell our intrigue. It has about 30,000 miles on it, all of the maintenance records and all of the upgrades, PTO, etc. It has been an excellent unit I have just replaced all of the batteries, but I need to wash and wax it. The first thing that I did before starting the house was to build a 60' X 42' building on the property to house our Intrigue. I can send pictures and more information if you are interested. We have had our 42' Affinity for just under 4 years now. We bought this particular coach because we loved the floor plan and the south west interior theme. I have driven quite a few Country Coaches of different lengths. They all drive well. IMHO our current 42' is about as good as it gets with regard to driving ease and comfort. We are also quite happy we did not get passenger side slides. We are into our basement storage areas constantly and having slides on both sides usually makes that harder. (I have seen a few coaches with slides on both sides and through storage basements between the passenger side slides. I would be OK with that.)

There have been a number of instances in the last four years where we would have preferred a 38-40' coach. This last summer we were able to stay at Colter Bay in Grand Teton but not at fishing bridge in Yellowstone. We drove to Yellowstone and I went in and asked them if they could fit us in and was told no. And they had vacancies. We also were turned away from the best commercial RV park in Jackson WY this summer. 40' max at their park. Many State Parks and other public RV campgrounds will not take over 40'. For that matter many will not take over 25', 32', or 35'. But there seems to be a real ceiling you hit when you get to 40'.
I had to get a special drivers license to drive a coach over 40' in California. It is a class B. I would guess most people ignore this requirement. But ignoring it could really bite you if you get into an accident.
We have also been in many RV parks where I would have wished for a shorter coach to maneuver through narrow streets, trees, and other obstacles. I have never once hit a curb with our front wheels, but have hit a few with the back cutting a corner too quick.
I really like our 11 year old coach. When I look at other motorhomes I do not see anything that really inspires me to get out my checkbook, yet. Who knows if and when we may see something we really have to have. But I can tell you that if the time comes to buy a new coach or newer coach I will not buy anything over 40'. Keep in mind that the longest trip we have taken in our motorhome was just over 2 months.

We have the 40' Allure and when I measure it, it really comes out to about 41' 3''...I usually tell the RV lot that we have a 42 just to be on the safe side. Last year we stayed at Colter Bay and fit into the space that we got. If I have been turned away it because it's a national park or something...although when I research where we will be staying I make sure it's has big rig availability....

I went from a 410ft Beaver to a 45 ft Entegra in April. I agonized over the extra length, but now that I have driven the coach 5000 miles in a couple of months I do not think it is an issue. There was one park that we could not go into that we could have used with the shorter coach, but this is the exception and not the rule. The extra room and storage and better ride are worth it in my opinion. For someone who likes to stay in state parks in the northeastern US it could be a problem, but for the midwest and western US or for private parks, it is not generally an issue.

You've got good feedback from others, and I'll toss in my $02 for you to:)!

IMO:

The sweet spot on length is the 42-43' coaches -Most states do not require special driver license classes (CA is one that does) -You pick up one more bay of storage, that is lost on the 40' models to make Tag room (We have a 40' and do well, but would have liked that extra storage bay.) >If the 45 drivers license special class does not bother you, very seldom will you not fit that 45' in the same place that you can a 40'.
If going over 40', look for the bigger block engines of ISM or Big CAT Blocks. The C9's and ISL's work hard on the 40' size, so moving up to the bigger engines is a good thing to consider.
Other then that, personal choices on interior layout including slide count - is only something you can decide what is important to you.
If we had the coin, I'd not bat an eye on looking for a move to a larger coach. We did have the 42' Intrigue with Big Cat as our preferred CC to look at, but when the wife saw the Galley size of this year Allure High Cascade Model - it was game over!!! I'm 95%++ happy with the full package. (You can find a post of my Likes and Would Have Liked on this specific era Allure, search for Smitty)

I am always curious why there are so many 45 footers for sale. We have enough problems with our 40 footer (41.8) especially when we want to go to some of the state and federal parks. We spend about 250 nights a year in our rig and cannot imagine why you would need more room.

I wanted the 3rd bay with full access my 98 37 ft 10" Allure didn't have and when I saw the 42' would

turn inside my 98 Allure I was sold. Over weight issues were a problem on the 98 Allure, too. Carol

liked the full Kitchen and increased storage she could have after Davis Cabinets extended all the

drawers and added drawers under the cook top and under the prep area. We also had them add a

second door under the sink for added access. Cabinets were installed over the DS side sofa, the height

of the cabinet on the floor behind the drivers seat was doubled and the length of the now 2 pull out

drawers doubled. A CD/DVD cabinet was hung on the wall behind the drivers chair, ala Magna. The

storage area behind the pull out drawers under the dining booth cushions was made accessible. 4

shelves were installed in the storage bays dropping down the distance of the chassis steel beams, too. It

was like adding another 1/2 bay of usable space. The remaining bay was left with out shelves for taller

items. I never use. I had Davis add a cabinet in the bedroom between the hanging cabinet and the night

stand. It now holds on the coach manuals and files, but could have contained the safeI moved from the rear closet to under the bed. What really surprised me was at 63 mph on the interstate the 42' Intrigue

got better milage than my Allure. At 55 mph the Allure surpassed the intrigue. In the mountains the

Intrigue out performed the Allure in climbing and much prefer the engine break to the exhaust brake of

the Allure. I think it is because of the different tire diameters and the fact the 3000 Allison is 15% more

efficient than the 3060 was. And maybe an ISL is more efficient than a 330 ISC. But I will say if I had

bought a 40' Allure or Intrigue originally there would have probably have been no need to up grade. I

hate having to spend money twice to get what I want.
