Changing Fuel Filters

Has anyone changed their fuel/water separator filters? Any special procedures or other hints would be appreciated. I have a 2002 Intrigue.

arthur, if? it's like my 2000 allure 33498, there is nothing to it. maine eng.(right side in the back)look at your book that came with you rv from cci. it well show you were they are.you turn them Counter Clock-Wise. eng. off befor doing this & just turn it tell it's come off, note it well have Fuel in it. i use a bucket for this, i do not put the same fuel back into the new filters, i get new fuel to do this. (THIS PART IS IMP.DO NOT PUT THE FILTERS BACK ON WITH OUT FUEL IN THEM, YOU CAN GET A AIR-LOCK IN THE LINE) THE ENG. WELL RUN TELL THE BATT. DOWN, WELL NOT START, BECAUSE IT HAS NO FUEL GETTING TO IT.IF?YOU HAVE WATER IN THE FUEL YOU CAN SEE IT, WATER &FUEL WELL NOT MIXED, WATER WELL ALWAYES COME TO THE TOP WATER ON THE BOTTOM.IF???????YOU SEE YOU HAVE VWATER IN THE FILTERS.
PLEASE, THINK. CAN I CHANGE THE FILTERS?????????? AND PUT THEM BACK ON IT IT WELL BE FINE......IF YOU THINK THIS WELL NOT DO IT DRAIN THE TANK, WARR. DOES NOT COVER ANY OF THE COAST... LAST YEAR IN AK.

Thanks for all the good information on changing fuel filters.
According to both the Cummins ISL manual and the CC Chasis manual, the filter are installed dry. They both use bold lettering to make the point. The ISL book even goes so far to suggest that fuel pump damage may occur if the filters are filled - seems like a streech to me.

The trick about turning the ignition on and off for 30 second cycles appears to be the key element to not stalling the engine.>

Hi Folks,

Witness the high level of response to this issue: to fill or not to fill. Either way works. To fill takes less time but dirt is the question. Don't fill and it takes time. I fill - using freshly purchased fuel using a container used only for this function. Not really a big issue - more of a preference.

I agree Fred. I also fill mine before installing. I do mine at home ...in the parking spot where I keep it. And each time I change them I go to the station ( truck depot) near me and fill my 1/2 fuel container ( thats ONLY used for this purpose) with fresh diesel. The amount of dirt and or water I might be making the engine ingest is about NONE ! In a math formula it might look something like...

An interesting subject has been brought up here, I.E. to pre-fill or not to pre-fill those filters before replacing.
I am in posession of a Cummins document that states clearly that one should not prefill. Now please understand that from my days in the Navy as a diesel mechanic to the present day I have always prefilled any filter.

To this end I have written to Cummins requesting verification of the document. It is targeting the ISC engine. It is not dated or identified with any publication serial number but it is definately a legitimate
paper.

For the benefit of all who own ISC powered coaches, who do their own servicing,I will advise the results when received.

On my previous Coach, Foretravel with the 12 Valve non-electronic
8.3, I always had to use the hand pump after a filter change before
I even thought of trying to crank it. With the electric pumps in these CC's, maybe it will fill the filters. (any brave souls want to try) Tom

I have changed mine without filling the filters with any fuel. It is clearly stated in the Cummins manual for my ISL engine, that you should not fill the filters. The electric pump will take care of any filling or priming of the fuel system.

I did have to go through 3 starts to get it to stay up without stalling. The first and second attempts stalled after about 5 seconds. After that, I never experienced any problems. Just turn the ignition on, and let it run the pump before starting the engine.

Pre-filling: Interesting question. My local service shop prefilled. When a filter is prefilled, does the diesel fuel fill the mostly filtered or unfilter portion of the filter. Maybe their concern is potential contamination of the filling fuel. Looking forward to your findings from Cummins.

My Allure 2002 #30690 ISC350 also stumbled as I drove out of the driveway immediately after a filter change WITH prefill.

With the Cummins IS- series engines, there is no need to pre-fill the fuel filters. After changing the filters, turn on the key without starting the engine and wait until the pump stops running, then turn it off and on again. Each time you do this the pump will cycle for 30 sec. You will need to do this several times (7-10) until the filters are filled and you actually hear the fuel return to the fuel tank.
Yes, by listening carefully, you can actually hear the air excaping as the fuel is returned to the tank. Continue to cycle the pump until the return is smooth without bubbling. If you follow this procedure you will have no fuel mess to deal with and all air will be removed from the system. I have done this procedure many times on my coach as well as teaching others.
