Floor Change Out

Last week I completed the floor change out in my coach. I'm pleased with the way the project turned out so I thought I would post a few pics of the job. Overall the job was not hard if you have basic DIY skills and tools. I will be happy to share the project details and minor issues that I encountered and resolved if there is interest.

Ken & Denice, I plan to put this into the blog.

I replaced the tired carpet in my coach with engineered hardwood floors. The project turned out quite well so I thought I would share my experience . I would rate this project a 2 on a scale of 1-5 five being the most difficult. If you have basic DIY skills and tools you can complete the project in about 16 hours.
Tools: 48" locking straight edge, Workmate table, good quality Jig saw, 24" square, framing square, Drill motor & bits, wood rasp, tape measure, box & utility knifes, screw drivers, pliers needle nose & standard, felt stain touch up pen, hammer, putty knife, and a mastic trowel. I did not have to remove any furnishings such as seats or couches, your situation may be different.
Removing the old carpet and padding is quite straight forward. Cut the carpet just behind the drivers & passengers seats in a logical transition area. The carpet and padding can then be removed by hand. You will probable spend a few hours removing all the staples left behind. Vacuum all debris from the floor.
YOUR NEW FLOORING MUST NOT EXCEED 7/16" in THICKNESS. lay out your new flooring starting from the large drivers side slide. Make sure all joints are staggered and you are happy with your layout before you begin the glue down process. Stack your laid out flooring one row on top of another so you glue it down in the same order you laid it out in. I glued four rows of flooring at a time this gave me adequate working time before the glue setup. Make sure all your joints are tight, using a scrap piece of flooring and tapping with a hammer will work fine. Step on every foot of flooring using your body weight to make sure good contact is made with the sub floor. After 24 hours of drying you can walk on & begin to retract your slides. Retract your slides using caution. If your slides contact the floor you may have to add a 1/8" shim under the nylon slide bar. This is not a difficult task. You will need to have custom transition molding made by a local wood shop if your galley tile has a large radius as mine does.
Don't forget measure twice and cut once.

Many ways to install flooring. I start at top of entry with stair nose wood. Butt new planks up to that. Factory edges look better then cut edges, especially if they are micro- beveled. Ernie Ekberg
