Norcold 1200 Failures

We replaced ours with a Samsung and life is good, but two of our friends here in the park in 5th wheels have 1200s that are dying. They're looking at replacement cooling units, Amish of course, and are being told Norcold now has a "new new and improved"? replacement cooling unit.
Do any of you know about the new Norcold cooling unit and/or have any thoughts about it?

I would be very suspicious of anything Norcold offered, unless they were replacing all the faulty refers they built FREE OF CHARGE!

I had the Amish unit installed by Chris Snyder last year. Updated the refer reaches 35 degrees in about half the time as before and keeps the freezer section cooler. The fridge stays at 40 degrees when its 113 in Phoenix. I know, who wants to be in Phoenix at 113 degrees? I was in Tucson getting a new front air-conditioner on the roof and that's as far north as I could get that day. I was very lucky I guess. When Chris and I pulled the old refer there was no sign of any discoloration from over heating and there was no sign of coolant leaks on the floor of the refer cabinet.

Free IS a very good price, BUT I would like to know it's not going to blow up and/or burn the house down!

Chris Snyder did my amish update in Tucson last year also. The replacement unit came with 2 fans and Chris removed one of them saying it was not needed and is noisy. Did he remove your 2nd fan? Does it work in those 113 degree days in AZ?

I have both fans and an auxiliary fan control kit thats supposed to provide more consistent performance. As long as the sun isn't shinning directly on that side of the coach the refer stayed at about 38 degrees the freezer got up to about 18 as I remember, which isn't cold enough for ice creme to be hard, but everything else that was frozen stayed solid. I wouldn't want to try to start from ambient interior temp with the exterior temp that high. I originally order the coach with 3 airs, but was denied as the 10 K genset wouldn't fit until CC started making a pull out drawer available in Nov. 2004. Its hard for the refer to keep up when the interior is at 80 degrees.

Jim - Given Norcold's track record, I would avoid doing business with the company. Pines RV Refrigeration actually is in touch with their customers and they pick up the phone. They also stand behind their products if any problems develop. I've had personal experience with this. Thumbs up! My usual "go or "no go" test for deciding whether to do business with a company is very simple. Do they answer their phone? Is the phone in America? Can you speak with someone knowledgeable? Do emails get returned? Do phone calls get returned? Are they selling professionally designed well thought through products or beta test models? And if they sell you a clunker (it happens to the best of us), will they stand behind it by correcting their mistake? Assuming stuff is well designed in the first place, service and support are everything.
Support the businesses that support their customers. And don't forget when the new cooling unit arrives, someone needs to install it. Lots of ways this can go bad too. The replacement is tricky and needs careful attention to details.

Thanks Scott, I think Pines is the choice and an install team will come to Ajo, AZ and do the job.
