Generator Help

Looking for all of your expert advice as I am a CC newbie. If I have my generator running and I start the coach, the generator immediately shuts down (along with everything currently "on" of course). I am assuming this is a setting somewhere that I need to correct? Thanks in advance!

Your generator will not run if your fuel tank is under 1/4 full. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

Brett, I had the same problem with mine. The generator wouldn't run with the engine running. It was like that from when it was new, but I didn't know enough about motorhomes and generators to know the generator was supposed to run with the engine until the warranty was up. Now the bad news, I took it to Cummins Northwest in Coburg last year and $800 later they still couldn't find the problem. As a side note, last year my alternator quit and I used my generator with the engine running to keep the batteries charged across Idaho and Nevada until I could get it replaced (Thank you Kevin and Butch). I would suggest you give Kevin Waite a call (541-953-6162). He and Butch Williams have a phone tech support service that has saved me from being towed twice in the last few years. They are very knowledgable about CC's. Good luck.

I'm not sure about the problem you describe I use the generator to power the three roof AC units while I am driving in 90+ temps. Bob. 06 intrigue 12047

Bob, thats our problem. The generator will not run with the engine running so we can't run our AC's when going down the road. It sounds like Brett and I have the same problem.

Sounds like your chassis batteries could be dropping below 10.5 volts when you start the coach. After the coach starts can you restart the genny? Will it continue to run then? If so it is most likely the chassis batteries are probably dropping below 10. 5 volts during coach start. Check battery condition, connections on the engine and genny. Then check the voltage at genny when starting the coach. Some have had to use heavier wires to the genny, others have added a battery for the genny only.

Let me know, I can help further.

Mikee will probably have a much better thought than this, I would disconnect the remote control from the generator and see if the generator shuts off when you start the engine.

Thank you all for your advice on this issue. The generator runs fine when the coach is either on or off...it is the act of turning the coach on/off that kills the generator.

Did you check the chassis battery voltage when starting? This is most likely the cause. It is probably dropping below 10.5 volts. This happen a lot as batteries age or connections need attention.
