Yahoo Groups has too many ads intermixed in the Conversations and on

Yahoo Message Number: 94368
Hi Folks,

The subject says it all.

A quick look at Google Groups and they have none.
I think that Yahoo Groups has run its course.
Maybe it's time to switch. The question is, does Google Groups have most of the same bells and whistles.
Maybe less is best.
Your thoughts.

Hi all

It feels like there is less activity here since the change. I read a couple of forums and irv2 country coach section seems to have a lot more activity. I think its only natural folks are going to participate in formats that are easy to navigate and be free of intrusive adds. The yahoo adds seem to be written in a way go get a click. I know I have clicked on a couple thinking they were subjects. I guess it just progress.

I agree, it's time to find a new home for this group.

I agree that the change seems to have complicated this form. However, using Firefox browser and Ad-Block Plus, I see no ads on this forum.

Hi Fred,

While simple in meaning the term switch as applied here has a lot of implications. First off the future of this group is in the hands of the owner/moderator. Second even if he agrees I believe that it would be more like abandoning this group and creating a new one. While I haven't looked into Google Groups I doubt very much if moving the group members and archive messages would be an easy task if even possible. I am fairly sure that ads will be coming there as well in the future. Sounds like a lot of work for somebody vs. tolerating some ads and a less than thrilling new Yahoo interface. I didn't hear any volunteers or are you volunteering Fred?
Personally I don't have many of the Yahoo problem because I receive the posts via my email client and likewise reply either to the group or to the individual. I rarely log into the group unless it is to view something that requires my being logged in. For me the search function has always been a hit or miss proposition so I never use it.
One thing that should be made very clear is that a Yahoo Group is not a Forum. The are two very different entities. Roger Berke abandoned his Yahoo Hydronic Heating Group several years ago in favor of creating a forum. He may be a good source of what it is all about.

I'm this first one to admit that I have little experience in how Yahoo hosts the groups. I do, however, not receive any advertising, nor any disruption of the forum format that others have complained about. It could be a browser issue, as I use Apple products and use Safari as my primary browser. The format for the postings has remained the same, for me, as it has been since I joined six years ago. No changes, no ads; perhaps someone who has used different browsers could weigh in on this discussion, and if the problem could be solved with a different browser, problem solved.

I belong to a group that values old sales literature, photos, owners manual, ands shop drawings of Stereo Speakers. We like the new Yahoo, because it allows us to post more material easily. We don't have a moderator, but we do have a person who is rather good with Apple computers and if we are sending scans or photos: We send them to her first and she formats them and makes sure the document is posted as clearly as possible with out wasting valuable storage space. Our membership is nothing like CC, and the product is not as complicated as CC, So it works well for us. I use an iMac and the new Yahoo is easier than the old, with no issues as far as I'm concerned.

when I stated hearing comments regarding the update I to did not see any difference but it seems Yahoo is updating via some kind of timetable. I had two yahoo accounts. One got updated the other not so I continued to use the one that was not updated. Over the last couple of weeks both have been updated. I think it may be for some they just haven't been updated. You can tell the difference when the traditional search bar is move to the top and it says search conversations and you no longer have the bar on the left to look at files and such. I'm not sure where that went.

I am not sure I understand the problem with ads, are we talking about the ads on the right side? Pretty easy to ignore, on a free site.
I am not thrilled with the new layout but I seldom come to the site and mostly communicate through email, again it is a free site.

Rod looks like they now have your groups down the left side and the files links etc are tabs at the top of the page. Liked the old way with the calendar you could click a month and review posts there, on the rare occasion I was on the site.

The adds I see look like other member post so about every 6th post is an add. There is also the stuff on the right which is fine. I just find myself clicking down the post and then click on an add by mistake. I have been watching more closely. I just have to get used to it. I just don't like change and want everything to stay the same but I know that's not reality.

G'morning everyone,

I'm not sure what the problem is? I like Don Seager get all posting through my email. I never see an ad. I respond to the 'group' or the 'sender'. Unless I'm starting a new topic, there is no need to log on to yahoo.com.
I would not like to see the group switch. I think we would loose a lot of members.

For those of us that get or got those irritating ads on the right side. It was suggested here a couple of times to download "Ad Blocker" for free. It has been the best thing since sliced bread for me. Not only did it stop the right side ads, it blocks all the ad on other sites. I at first felt uneasy about downloading something that might cause more problems than it was intended to do, but it has done exactly what it suppose to do. Try it you might like it.

This sounds like a great idea and app to get. Since we receive our CC entries on our email, I don't ever see an ad either. I do wonder if the traffic has lessened, however.

So grateful for all of the info everybody posts!

I don't post much at all, but I do use this group as a great resource and treasure trove of information! Up until a couple of months ago, I still had the old format, then one day...this new format. I must admit haven't been on it much since then as it's just not that easy to see the list of topics, and all the replies in order, too much having to navigate around to find what used to be pretty straight forward. I don't mind the ads so much, but think they should be on the side not dispersed and intertwined within the threads. If Google offers something that is plain and straight forward and easy to navigate...might be worth a shot.

Vickie,

You may well be right but the question is 'who is going to take that shot'? Sorry to sound so negative but I am not sure what in your mind may be worth the shot. Whatever it is will likely be a lot of work for someone. There are some supporters but no volunteers that I know of.

I moderate both Yahoo groups and Google groups that I inherited. Google groups are a pain to moderate and don't have the same bells and whistles. Use your delete key.

I am at a loss here. We don't see any ads with our CC yahoo group. Maybe I'm not looking in the right areas.

I think it depends on what sites have been visited and what cookies have been placed on your computer . I suspect the upgrade was designed to allow Yahoo to integrate marketing into the groups for more revenue.

This is a very good point I have my browser set to not accept third party cookies. So the site I am visiting can place cookies and ones that are strictly for that visit are allowed otherwise it asks me and I almost always say no.

I have yet to see the first ad on this site. Wonder why some get inundated and others none? Curious!

Bob and others:

It has been several years ago that I joined this group. I have mostly just looked but occasionally contribute under " rollingghetto" ID. When I joined there were choices as to how I would receive the wisdom from the group.
One method was to receive each and every communication from contributors.
Another was to go on line to the Yahoo site when I elected to do so and either read there or download the batch.

There are benefits and disadvantages to both. If you don't want to have all the stuff come in and fill up your e-mail then you will have to endure the adds on the yahoo site.
If you want to be add free the accept the influx of incoming e-mails. I trust I have stated the situation correctly. Examine how you have chosen to receive the program.

One additional choice James. You can choose digest and get one mail per day with all messages in it. This will reduce the overhead of individual messages if you are on metered service.

You do not need to receive a single ad. I don't see any...ever.

Download AdBlock Plus. It is available for IE, Chrome, Firefox.........
