HWH not responding

Yahoo Message Number: 94944
I am parked at the Charlotte Motor Speedway enjoying the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang. I have been experiencing leveling problems along the way from my home base in South Texas.
Problem 1 - The coach has been slow building air pressure in the braking system when first starting out or when driving slowly. When you get on the road the air pressure comes up to 125 PSI as expected.
Problem 2 - When pulling in for a night of camping I turn the auto level on and the coach acts like it going to level, dumps the high side bags but does not fill the low side bags. When I try to raise all the bags with the engine running I have 80 PSI on the coach tanks, the little compressor runs, but the bags do not raise the coach. I have noticed that when I start off in the morning the coach does not go into the travel mode until the system builds high pressure when running at highway speeds.
The little compressor seems to run a lot even though the coach engine is running. The engine tank should be feeding the HWH system through a one way cross connection between the braking system and the HWH. Seems like the small compressor would not have to run if it was getting 80 PSI air from the big compressor.

I have already tried to trick the system by adjusting the leveling board

Does anyone have any ideas?

We feel your pain!

We just left HWH in Moscow Iowa after 4 trips back. They had to replace all 4 of our 20 psi pressure valves and the main system pressure valve 85psi and the stop valve after the compressor. They also installed a rebuilt control box with the latest software and a new touchpad.
Our symptoms were that the travel mode light would go out and the HWH warning light would come on the dash. It was sporadic. In addition, our front right side would go way high and the coach would attempt to level to that height and of course it never would and the compressor would continue to run.
HWH is an awesome company. I'm so glad we went to the factory rather than somewhere else. Although it took the 4 tries and lots of troubleshooting we knew it would be difficult to diagnose. Of course every time we headed to the factory the system was working fine. The problem was sporadic. HWH treated us well and the price was fair. Highly recommend going there for any HWH service if you can. They have a few sites with electric hookup and a dump station on their property. Appointments are necessary.
Anyone coming to Iowa that needs an RV site, we're at Scott County Park, Bald Eagle Campground in Eldridge Iowa (Davenport). Nice park, full hookups, $22.00 per night, $21.00 per night for seniors. It's about 30 miles east of HWH.

I can only say that Tom Johnson camping center has a pretty good service center and you are right next door to them. Hope you get it worked out.

It is time to call HWH. Call early in the morning. I think they open up at 7am CDT. They should call you back but it sometimes it takes longer than we would like but they are very good at helping you trouble shoot your problem.

I've never seen anything published on how high the air pressure needs to raise the coach but ti could be more than 80 psi. On my coach, I do my initial level at a campsite with the engine running. The small auxiliary air compressor does not have nearly the volume flow level at higher pressures that the engine compressor has.

I guess it is good that you eventually build full air pressure at higher engine speed, but you should be able to build full engine pressure at an idle although it might take several minutes if the system air pressure is low when you start the engine.

As a first check, move the coach to a level place or block the wheels and start the engine, let the system build to full air pressure, release the emergency brake and then use the brake pedal to drop the air pressure down to the point that the compressor kicks on to build the pressure back up. If this takes longer than 3 to 5 minutes to reach full pressure at a fast idle you may have a problem with the primary air system: compressor, air filter/drier, or leaks. If this is the case you need to have the problem taken care of immediately.

I can also vouch for Tom Johnson's. They are incredibly busy and service appointments are far out but if you have an issue that prevents you from traveling, perhaps they will work you in. They sell and service a lot of high end coaches so they are familiar with air leveling systems.

Lonnie.... We just had Tom Johnson adjust our ride heights and check our HWH system which seems to occasionally get a bit goofy. We are heading to Summit RV Products in Altoona, IA in mid June and plan to make an appointment at HWH to have our system checked.

Terry,

When was the last time you changed drier filters. It could be a plugged filter that's restricting flow. Hope you find problem.

P.S when traveling home if you pass through New Orleans give us a call.

Thanks, good to hear from you. I'm parked next to a good dealer, I'm going to let him look at it.

Note to all:

Thanks for all your help. I got the coach into Tom Johnson RV located next to Charlotte Motor Speedway at 4 PM on Good Friday. Tech's Scott and Rick stayed late with me and we found a cracked brass T on the front air tank. Thank goodness we found it before my return trip to south Texas, it could have broken off completely on the trip south resulting in all kinds of problems. The fitting leaked just enough air to keep the leveling system from getting the high pressure needed to level the coach.
Kevin and Butch of course provided great phone support for me to help diagnose the problem before I was able to get into Tom Johnson RV. If you ever need support in the North Carlolina the can do the job. They have a large service department with every thing you need. Their techs are well trained and can take care of all your coach's systems.

On a different subject, my air dryer appears to be non replaceable. Does anyone know how to tell the difference? If it is not servicable does it need to be periodically replaced? The boys at Tom Johnson did not think that it had desiccant in it and that it purged the air automatically.

Once again thanks for all the help.

In your manual under air systems it would tell about the filter. Ours has a metal band around the filter cartridge that you remove and the filter comes out. Cummins should be able to tell you.

Terry, I've attached the Bendix Air Dryer I think you have. http://www.bendixvrc.com/itemDisplay.asp?documentID=4772 If it is the Bendix Model AD-IP it is an Integral Unit, you leave the unit attached to the frame and get to the insides by a Large Bolt at the Bottom of the Unit per the document above.
Hope this helps,
