04 40' Allure, big slide needing a 'push'

We have a 40' Allure High Cascade, with two driver side slides. The large front slide, will sometimes not quite make the 'bump up rise' when first starting to come in. I need to get out, and provide a bit of assistance to push it to get it thru that first 'rising' portion of the slide coming in.

I re-read all of the shop orders from when the first owner, and see not evidence of any maintenance. I did ask one shop a year ago, to service the slides if they needed any lubrication.

My bet is that the fluid is the same that was in the coach when it was manufactured in Sept of 2003.

Never any signs of leaking or loss fluids.

Do these have filters or need fluid changes after a period of time?

Any other ideas on things to check? Never has not gone in with assistance, so sure not panicking. But, if I can check something while traveling, I will.

The big slide on the driver's side of my 2004 Allure was electric not hydraulic. No fluid involved. The rider's side was hydraulic and the only one of the three.
Do you run the engine when retracting the slide to keep the voltage up? Don Seager

Hey Don - Hope all is well!

I do run the engine at all slide closing/openings.

I wish I had brought all of our manuals, but left one box at home, to make room in the coach for the DW's 'important things:)!'... I'll poke around some next time we're out of the rain. (Valdez is great, even as the clouds descend all around us.) To see I can spot electric vs hydraulic, always assumed hydraulic.

Not sure your's is configured like mine, but the large, flat floor driver's side front slide is a Power Gear which is an electric motor, gear-driven mechanism. All the other slides on the coach are hydraulic. You can see the motor if you look into the large storage bay under that slide. The motor is at the top of the compartment and to the right.

If your's is Power Gear, you may have sheared a pin (there are four). Or, you may try giving the gear rack and the gears a shot of silicone lube (Kevin Waite told me not to lube the rack with anything that would attract dirt and silicone was the best bet).

I also lift the carpet edge near the sofa, clean that nylon ramp well and spray it with silicone since there is a lot of friction in that area when the slide rides up to clear the coach floor. That may also be your source of resistance as the slide is coming in.

Thanks for the info. I also had a great info PM from Michael, with schematics from the 430/470 Allures.

We're in for about 3-4 days of solid rain, in Valdez, AK. When it stops, I'll open the front bay and pull out the stored stuff to access the panel I can see.

As you, and Don, and Michael pointed out, chances are this is a all electric slide.

I do run the coach when open/close of slides is taking place. But, perhaps I have some dirty electric connections/grounds. I'll see what I can see.

My coach does not have strips on the floor, but I do have silicone and will spray what I can see from underneath with the slide extended.

We always wait for the slide to fully open/close, and then wait until hear the I think they're called actuators, that are 'syncing' things. We did have a few times in the last month where we had to stop the slide while opening and two times while closing. Perhaps the 'syncing' is not taking place.

Takes just a little bit of pushing on my part to get it up as it first rises while closing. It's not like I'm putting my back into it or anything. And, the big slide area has less weight in it now, then we used to carry, after we shuffled some furniture around that we used to store things in.

Thanks Jay - And yes to always having the drivers window open while operating the slides.

Found that out the hard way:)! Our first big trip in this rig, we were pulling into Reno, CA with about 106 temp outside. Had generator running and both AC's fired up to try and keep it cool inside. I did not know about the need to open a window then, and the slide 'stopped' a bit cocked on the way out. It also 'popped' the L metal out the bottom front edge of the slide, and gorilla tape was used to get us home before the normal repair of three screws and strom 3M, topping the seam now is a regular maintenance with fresh silicone. May do the vinyl tape trick, if I can find a color that the DW likes:)!

This board, taught me real quick about keeping a window open:)!

If the slide has two exposed beams underneath it when extended then it is electric. The hydraulic slide on the rider's side on my coach had no beams and was flat on the bottom.
CC went to electric slides to allow for the floor level slide which is difficult to accomplish with hydraulic slides. I am also almost sure your rider's side slide is hydraulic and extends and retracts with a vengeance. No push needed there. I often wondered if my driver's side slide was going to make it coming in but it always did.
Something may be binding slightly on the slide making it unable to climb up to clear the floor coming in.
My patio awning was not Carefree but rather Dometic as was the entry awning. The entry awning motor kept filling with water and jamming no matter what I tried. I eventually gave up on it. While there were a number of things I did not like about the patio awning its handling of rain was clever and worked well. The support piston on the rear extension arm collapses when the weight of the water reaches a predetermined point letting the water drop off the awning. The piston the extends again returning the awning to the normal raised position until the next time. How often it happens depends of course on how hard it it raining. The only problem is that it makes a rather startling bang that can be quite a surprise in the middle of the night. The trick is to not panic as it takes a pretty healthy build up of water for it to dump.

I have, on two different Coaches been told during the walk through to open some windows before retracting slide outs. I usually have the front door open so don't pay much attention, maybe I should. If you want to check it out do so in the bedroom start to close it and as you are, reach over and slide open a widow You should hear a noticeable difference in the motors, feel the difference in the air differential and I am sure you would see it on the gauges. Maybe check the manual, it may come from there, who knows ? What problem it would address in this thread I do not know, just a comment on the last two posts I saw.
