Retrieving Onan diesel generator fault codes?

Anyone know if the Onan HDKAK diesel generator fault codes are stored/retrievable? Or do you have to stand there and watch the light waiting for it to shut down. Mine is stopping after a few hours. On restart it may shut down in a few minutes, or run for another hours or so. Coolant level is good, belt is ok, oil level is good. TIA for any help.

I had the same problem watch the code mine was overheating. There is two fan belts one is hard to see and that is the one that was broke causing the overheating.

Yes Mikee, just the other day after it shut down the first time. Also, changed oil and blew out filler neck air vent for coolant. I think my 8 K gen has only one belt. Thanks

There is a water temperature overheat switch which will cause this symptom if it is going bad.

The only to determine what the generator thinks is the problem is to count the blinking light codes and refer to the code chart.

It may be a loose belt or an air leak in the fuel system.

Thanks to all. Discovered that blinking lights continue for five minutes after shutdown. Since I have no blinking lights, I was told by a fellow RVer that it's a fuel issue. I guess I will approach it from that angle.

Most likely an air leak in the fuel system. Did the issue perhaps begin right after you changed the fuel filters? If not, you may consider getting a fuel can with diesel and run a hose from that to the generator and see if the issue goes away, if it does then you know you have an air leak.

Thanks Mikee. Filter was changed after first occurrence. Today it was hard to start. Had to prime for over a minute. Had cool weather last night, which might be contributing factor to hard starting? Sounds like strong possibility of air leak though. Will check fuel line connections (etc) next.

The rubber fuel lines tend to develop cracks and then air leaks as they get older. You may have to change the fuel lines depending on what you find.
