2003 Intrigue Cummins 400 ISL heater valve dumped my coolant

Just wanted to mention this because it caused me to lose my coolant and a day. Maybe others can benefit, Just had my coach serviced and got down the road 50 miles and noticed a coolant leak when driving up to another shop. After looking under the rig and thru the engine compartment the leak was coming from a pop can looking valve that sits front left ( drivers side) just above the cummins. Upon returning to the repair shop, 13 gal of water later, the guy mentioned they usually bypass those valves on the fleets of school busses they service because they do not serve much purpose and cause problems. Some sort of pre heat or rear heat valve and since we are almost always in hot weather ( not a cold weather RVer) it made sense.
Just thought I would mention it as my 11 yr old coach has 63k and maybe I can save you a repair.

Be curious as to your comments on this issue.

Hi Gerald - Just went thru what we hope was a false alarm on my Coolant Boost Pump starting to fail too. I put the message number and heading below, for others to read if it helps them too.

We have never had any moisture on the ground, nor never needed to add coolant. We're on a long trip for us, just hit the 7K mile mark last week. I noted a darker coating of dirt/dust (ALCAN Highway always has long stretches of construction going on.). No actual signs of moisture, but knew it looked 'different'. Great help from board members, and Kevin Waite too.

Just yesterday I had a mechanic along the way look at it with me, and after looking it over well, the conclusion was my coolant hose clamps had loosen up enough for a slight escape of fluid. This was tossed onto the pump as we drove, and then the dirt/dust attached to this.

He tightened up the clamps, and again checked for leakage around gaskets on the Boost Pump, and we're going to run with this for awhile. I'll monitor this closely as it's not fun dumping your coolant.

I think I'm also just going to have it bypassed during my next major maintenanced cycle.

Thanks for sharing, and hope you don't mine me posting the hose clamps loosening to your thread too. (Thread number below, if anyone wants to check this out.)

Best to all, be safe, have fun,
Smitty

I just had that pump replaced. The pump cost $425 and it takes an hour and half of labor to install it (tech has to stand on his head on top of the motor from the bedroom access).

Replaced my Heater booster pump after 10 years of operation. This pump does start running when the ignition is on and until the engine is off. I also lost 6 gallons of coolant and luck to happen in my driveway. I purchased a 24" length of heater hose, connectors and clamps for the next time. By pass did not seem to be a good option for traveling during cold weather. I also like that hot water tank option.
