Black stains in Ceiling

Tim Reed, who is a warranty service tech for CC at Lazy Days RV, recently sealed the back cap in the engine compartment on my 2000 CC Intrigue. The lack of this seal had caused black soot to be drawn from the engine compartment up into the fiber glass cap and then drawn into the inside of the coach resulting in a black soot line in the ceiling in the bedroom and in the bathroom. CC phone reps tell me that they have a vendor in Oregon who has a proprietary process to clean this residue from the ceiling. The problem is that the vendor will not share the cleaning solution with others so that would require me driving over 3000 miles to Junction City to have that vendor clean the ceiling. Has anyone found any satisfactory method of cleaning the ceiling? The vendor at Lazy Days who does all their detail work took a look at the soiled ceiling in our coach and tell me they have nothing that will clean it properly. They would love to have access to the solution used by the CC vendor in Oregon, this would help numerous CC owners who have this problem as well as relieving the factory of having unhappy coach owners with the problem and no reasonable fix, driving over 3000 miles one way to get this fixed is not reasonable to me. If anyone knows of a way to purchase the cleaning solution from the Junction City vendor I would greatly appreciate getting the required contact information. I do not know the name of the vendor. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Please tell us about this sealing that needed to be done. Where is the problem "gap?" Can I expect this problem in my '98 Intrigue #10571? Or was the body changed between mine and yours?
As for the soot on the ceiling ... I recommend that you check with your local big city police department to find out who cleans up houses where fires and trauma (murder, suicide, etc.) occurred. Those folks can clean anything.

If you don't have a line of soot in the ceiling inside your coach then yours was probably sealed at the factory. I'm not sure how they sealed them while under assembly but the after delivery fix can be seen at the very rear of the engine compartment, just open the engine compartment access door and look inside an up above the compartment hinges and you should see about a 4 inch wide seal running the width of the coach. It seems to be a foam seal with the aluminum foil backing facing down as you look up into the back of the engine compartment. I just wish that I had know about this problem when I first bought the coach as the the first owner so I could have avoided trying to find a cleaning solution to clean it up now. At least now the soiling should not get any worse than it is.

Let me know if you find something that will take it away. The best I have found is Oxyclean, but it does not take it all out. My coach has been sealed multiple times, but it appears that alot of soot must have gotten above the ceiling before the problem was hopefully fixed and continues to filter through. Vinyl ceilings took care of this problem..

You would think that as many coaches with this problem, CC would hire the guy and let him travel around to dealers to clean coaches.

We have had good luck using rubbing alcohol for stains just about everywhere. Put some on a cloth and blot the stain until it disappears.

Why would you wait 3 years to have Tim fix this problem. This has been a problem for lots of manufacturers over the years. We had a 96 Safari and it had to be sealed twice before the problem was solved, but we did it in the first 2 months at rallies and we never had any problems with getting the stains cleaned up. They were small at that point.

I haven't waited for three years, been trying to get this as well as other problems solved but always ran into a brick wall until I met Jim Craig on Phone line at CC. He took up my case on several issues and has responded in a highly positive manner. I got the run around from Kevin Kiscoan for several months, he wouldn't tell me that it was a fixable problem and even insinuated that I had done something to cause the problems I was having. Thanks to a new attitude at CC several of my problems are finally be addressed. I am now working to try and get the electolysis problem resolved, I didn't realize that CC was taking care of these problems until I spoke with several owners who have gotten them fixed by CC, armed with this knowledge I renewed my efforts to get several items that have plagued the coach from the beginning and thanks to Jim Craig and his team I am seeing results. Changes my whole attitude toward the company. It is my understanding that CC has known about the problems I am facing but only fixes individual cases as they are brought to the attention of someone there who will actually address the problem. I first brought many of these problems to the attention of the top tech people at the Maine rally in fall of 2000. I am a long way from the factory and I have never been able to get out there to get resolution, the efforts of Jim Craig and Tim Reed are the best response I have gotten. Long story is that is why it has taken 3 years to get resolution. I would have preferred that it be done in the first year but one can only spend a limited amount of time trying to get repairs done unless one is a full time service center junkie. I still love the ride of our coach and I am happy that many unresolved issues are being resolved and hope to continue getting the results of the last few weeks.
Thanks again go to Jim Craig for his efforts and to Laurie Freeman for her help in getting the Charge Air Cooler shipped out - it's own it's way and should be here Wednesday-- Hoping that solves the black exhaust smoke problem and I am optimistic that it will.

Trichloroethane will fix your problem guaranteed. This is the technical term for common "dry cleaning fluid". We bought a tiny bottle years ago and it has never failed when nothing else would work. Maybe you can find a local dry cleaning company that would be willing to sell you a small bottle. It is highly toxic, so we only use it as a last resort. Try it - guaranteed it will take out the soot marks.

Let me know how CC works the door issue. I live in VA and they sent me a new door skin, but body shops want $1,400 -1,800 to install and paint. The other option was to send the door to CC for 5-6 weeks and they would do it at no charge. Cannot leave the coach with no door for a month or more.

It seems C Coach had a problem with some Allures and some Intriques ( and others also..??) where the company that made the front entry doors didnt do "something" during construction. Hence...galvanic corrosion set in because of the STEEL door frame and the ALUMINUM outer panel of the door. ( Which BTW is VERY thin and bonded to a 1/4 inch thick piece of luan underneath) (Mine was water soaked 1/2 way UP the door...bummer) This corrosion caused the paint to bubble and blister and finally come off and NO AMOUNT OF REPAINTING will cure it.
C Coach had come up with a fix...which was a 1/4 thick piece of ( They called it fiberglass...actually some sort of phenolic plastic...just as good though) material impervious to water or about anything. This meant TOTALLY removing the door...totally taking it apart...removing the aluminum/luan panel ( wndow...hinges...everything) bonding the new panel inplace and trimming it to the frame size ( its slightly oversized) inserting the new deadbolt lock ( provided) reinstalling the window and frame...attaching the side "trim pieces" of the door that are pop riveted on ad TOTALLY REPAINTING the door to match the coach. THEN re-installing the door ( and thats the BIT** part...that thing is HEAVY)
Coach supplied the parts and said they would go a MAX of $900 for labor to repair it. A coach tech friend of mine ndid the dis-assembly part and a custom motorcycle shop here in Cincinnati painted it for me with a PERFECT match to the coach. If I rememebr right...the whole bill came to about $775 or so....C Coach sent me the money within a few days of my faxing them the bill.

If you have a 99 Allure, though, that has had the door replaced once secondary to electrolysis and the problem returned, they only pay for the new insert not the labor.
