Filter on Samsung 197

About 9 months ago, I installed a new Samsung 197. Turns out that the model I installed has the water line to the ice maker filter in the BACK of the fridge. Which I am told needs to be changed every 6 months! Opening up the outside vent, I can see it through the bars in the vent.....The way it is installed, the only way I can see to solve this problem is to use a hack saw or something to cut a hole through te vent bars big enough to allow my hand to remove the filter....after turning the water off, of course. Any suggestions? D Jean

I'd pull the fridge out, by-pass the filter, install a inline filter somewhere that is easier to access and solve the problem for good.

I second this approach even if you were to find a longer duration filter good for say a year too much work on a regular basis. Jim's solution is good for the long term maintainability.

I will be installing the Samsung 197 later this year. So my question is this: Do I really need a filter in the system at all? We spend about 5 months wandering around but still spend part of the winter in Iowa. When home I need to winterize the coach. That includes the Aquahot, refrigerator and the washer/dryer. Doing this requires removing the house filter and would also require removing the refrigerator filter. The house filter is easy. We do not have a filter on our S&B refrigerator so why here? Newer fridges have filters or they tell you to install one if they have an icemaker or water in the door. In our Norcold the filter for the sink feeds the icemaker so if we install a residential we can just continue to feed from there.

No you don't need a filter. All depends on what expectations you have for the quality of your ice. In your S&B it has the same water supply (either from city or well) year round, while in a RV we have water from many different supply's and depending on the area your traveling thru it could be pretty nasty. Me personally, I always have a good filter system with at minimum a sediment & carbon filter for the main supply going into the coach, then for my ice maker I have an in-line filter. All of which gets changed at least yearly.

The owners manual for the Samsung states that a water filter is optional, not in the fridge. I Would install one in the line to the fridge where it's easily accessible.

Just out of curiosity.....If you filter the water entering your coach (In my case, I have a filter inside my coach and I also filter at the spigot....otherwise double filtered water coming into the coach water system), why then do you think it necessary to filter the water again going into your ice maker??
