over heating

I have a 2006 Affinity built in 2005 with 60k miles with a Cat c-13, 525 HP engine. Never over heated until recently on a sporadic basis.
The latest was yesterday on the way from Bend, OR to Olympia on I-5. No steep hills with AC on and temp was 195-204. Turned AC off and temp ran up to 224 which is too high. Turned AC back on and temp still seemed to fluctuate between 190 and 206.
In August on the way to Jasper, AD, steep hill, outside temp in the eighties, repeated times high temp to 226. Pulled over and idled awhile and cooled down.
In about 4000 miles this summer the high temp event occurred about 7 or 8 times. I suspect it is either one of the sensors or the main fan controller.

Any ideas out there.

John, With A/C on the compressor head pressure was activating your fan controller. Apparently the engine temp. in not activating the controller, check the sensor for coolant temp. Hope this helps.....Skip 2002 Intrigue #11329

Just went through a similar situation with my coach. Turned out to be a bad thermostat (I think Cat calls them regulators). This is sort of counterintuitive to me, however the tech said the thermostat was stuck open which will cause overheating, particularly while the engine is under load. I was able to run at 50 mph & keep temp close to normal range, however if I tried to go any faster or climbed a grade, the temperature would start increasing quickly. I had them replace the temperature sensors first and that didn't correct the problem. (My fan controller is also new) As a matter of interest, the local Caterpillar service facility here in Houston had changed the regulator just several months ago while I had it in for the valve lash adjustment.

Correct wide open and fluid travels to fast under load to dissipate the heat efficiently.

I had the same problem and after disconnecting the fan (just the plug with either 2 or 3 wires, I don't remember) for awhile, John Davis (an excellent source of information and parts) told me to change the sensor for the water (found right in front of you when you open the double doors). That solved the problem. You can buy the water and air sensors from him at a reasonable price.
