Electrolysis bubbles on slideout frame

So far the discussion of electrolysis seems to focus on the front door. I talked to two coach owners about 6 months ago who have had electrolysis bubbles appear under the paint on the thin frame surrounding the slideout room. As they describe it, electrolysis is caused by moisture interacting between dissimilar metals, specifically the aluminum trim that is mounted to the steel frame surrounding each slideout. When electrolysis occurs, the aluminum frame starts to corrode and causes tiny bubbles to appear under the paint on the thin frame.

I didn't get the names of the coach owners who had this problem. I'd like to talk with them to better understand how it was fixed. I understand that the slideout has to be removed to have the aluminum trim piece and slide seals replaced. Has anyone on this forum experienced this problem? If so, how was it fixed?

I was not one of the people that you talked to, but I have the problem on electrolysis bubbles on my gally slideout. I also had a HUGH leak in the slide that required the slide to be removed and new carpet and a new couch put in the coach (but that is another story)

I have just begun talking with Damon Rapozo, my salesman, about the problem and he is researching for me.

I would also like to know how many others are experiencing this problem in the slide area.

We had a lead in the great room slide where the roof joins to the outer wall. It was supposedly fixed by Buddy Gregg under warranty but the "fix" if you can call it that, consisted of slopping on some calk, which failed again. I removed the mess they made, sealed with 100% silicone and then went over it with the super-heavy foil faced adhesive roof patch material. No more leak.

This joint has the dumbest design I've ever seen. Instead of wrapping the metal over the front and rear sides, and flanging it upwards to join with the slide face, they did just the opposite, plus fastened it with rivets that leak.

Good thing they used waterproof glue on the ceiling carpet and wallpaper, else that would have come off.

Thanks all for the tip on the noisy door. I thought it was the awning hardware too, but on inspection, it is clear the gaskets seal poorly on the hinge edge.

We own a '02 Magna 42 and, upon inspection following the inputs on this board, note that we have paint bubbling on the foward edge of the bedroom slide opening. This slide has been a little problematic since new, with a serious leak into the overhead cabinets and the ability to bring water into the coach on the carpet when retracted following a rain. Since these issues have been documented in our CC warranty file, I will add the likely electrolysis for repair at our annual visit to Junction City in 2004.

I just had some work done on my slideout at Lazy Days, leaking outter wall and all room seals replaced at my expense. Tim Reed took photos of the electrolysis problem on slidout frame and on entry door face.
These photos were sent to CC, their response so far is not satisfactory. They said they would send to me replacment door skin which I would then have to have installed and painted at my expense, they also said that since the coach is out of warranty that they could not help with the slideout frame electrolysis problem. Since this is clearly a manufacturing defect since the beginning, it seems to me the right thing to do would be to replace the defective frames with ones which would not have the problem. I had the door bubbles fixed at Lazy Days during the first year of service, unfortunately they didn't enter this into their computer and now there is no record of the repair during the warranty period. I am still working this issue with CC, hoping to get favorable resolution. While at Lazy Days I was informed by Tim Reed that I had a cracked exhaust manifod, this was replaced under the Cummins warranty, while working this they told me that I also had a leaking CAC, this was replaced by CC under their vendors warranty. Hopefully, this will cure the black smoke problem which has existed on this coach since initial delivery.

Tom, Our Allure is the same age as yours with no problems. However, it has been inside except for about 6 weeks. How much has yours been outside? [I'm not suggesting that is an excuse, just wondering what to expect].

I dont think any paint problems on the slide are "electrolysis" problems. On my coach I see RUST ! On the very edge of the "skin" and its something I intend on re-doing this next spring. Having to mask off sand and paint the edge of a piece of metal about .020 thick will be time concuming but not difficult.

Sherry and I full time in our Allure. I do not think the amount of time you spend in your coach is the issue, it is moisture. We had approximately 7 separate leak areas in our gally slide (what happened to quality construction and quality control?). The leaks caused bubbles in the wall paper, mold on the coach and water saturation on the carpet and the floor board. The repair took almost 2 weeks at the factory.

This moisture in the slide is the cause of the electrolysis.

I hope your have continued success in your Allure!

Okay! Im with you on the water leaks/wallpaper bubbles etc. But what leads you to think the slide leaks are a result of "electrolysis"? That is basically the electro-chemical corrision of two dis-similiar metals..??

Thanks for the information. Since our units are almost identical you have gotten our attention. Did your leaks start showing immediately, like the first time you were in rain or the first time you washed it? We haven't found any in our 6 weeks on the road and have washed it many times. Should we be testing it more thoroughly before we head out again? Where did you first notice the leaks?

The first time we notice a problem was when we pulled in the slide after it was extended. We noticed water on the rug right behind the driver's seat. This happened vertually every time we pulled in the slide.

We took it the factory in April, 2003 and had a leak repair. In fact, the took off the whole outer skin of the slide and resealed it. Two weeks after we left the factory, we had water on the rug again. Several weeks after that, we noticed bubbles on the wallpaper behind the driver's seat.

Country Coach was concerned about the problem and suggested that we return to the factory to have it repaired again. Since it would entail the removal of everything in the slide to fix the problem they felt it was best if the factory fixed it. When the factory folks removed the couch and removed a bolt in the wall, almost 2 gals of water came pouring out.

Sorry for dragging this out, but it was a real problem. I have 16,000 miles on the coach and over half of the miles is to Junction City to get this leak problem fixed.

Macke, can you give more insight on the electrolysis problem .

Hi Tom,I just got on line and saw your post. Macke
The electrolysis problem started on my coach in Dec.02 and has been getting progressively worse. CC tells me the bubbling under the paint is happening because of the different metals they used for the metal trim and the screws. This is the metal trim on the slide opening in the coach wall(not the slide).My bubbles are on both openings, but the front slide trim is the worst. Solution, they said is to remove and replace the metal trim and use compatible screws. They said they would rather tackle that type of repair in the summer. Macke,2002 Allure 40' w/tag #30792

Is this a common problem CC has with water leaking into the coach when the slide is being closed? I was on the Oregon coast this weekend in the rain and when I closed the slide some water came in just behind the drivers seat, this occured when the slide was 3 or 4 inches from being in.

Is the problem a design problem or is it a gasket problem?

In the beginning, I had a problem with water in the coach after bringing in the slides. CC told me to bring in the slides a little at a time because the trough that the water collects in overflows and then the water is on the floor. Since then, I bring in the slide about 6-10 inches and pause and then repeat the process. This has eliminated any water getting into the coach from the slides.

The problem that I am having on my coach is not the "normal" water leaks behind. The water was actually going into the slide and staying in there, and leaking out slowly. As I mentioned before, there was approximately 2 gals of water that came out when the slide bolts were removed. This water created enough moisture to put bubbles in the wallpaper, and saturate the wood under the carpet.

I'm sorry if I made it sound like I didn't know how to bring in my slide. I wish that was the problem. Vaughn, there is a small water tray on the sofa, behind the driver's seat. This is where any water that does come into the coach is suppose to go and small amounts of water will appear on the carpet. This is probably what is happening in your situation.

I guess everyone is getting tired of hearing about my slide water problems, so I will end the posts on the thread. I just wanted Walt and Ree and a few others with coach #'s close to my of the problem that I was having.

By the way, CC did a great job taking care of the problem, and hopefully, that was the end of it.

Country Coach now recommends that the slides be brought in slowly in wet weather. My coach came with stickers next to the slide switches cautioning about slide retraction in wet weather.
