Idling Engoines

What is the conventional wisdom about idling the engine before departure from a camp site? I understand letting the engine idle during cool down for a few minutes, but really don't understand the need to annoy one's neighbors by idling for 5-10 minutes at 7:00am. It seems to me that a warm up can be achieved just as well by moving at a moderate speed for a few minutes while it gets up to operating temperature.
Am I missing something? Are my grumpy looks at my idling neighbor inappropriate? Is there benefit to spending the fuel and aggravating the neighbors?

Well, on my coach you have to run the engine to retract slides after you build up air for the suspension. That is usually enough time to warm it up. But a direct answer is engine warm up can be accomplished in the first few minutes of driving.
