Fan Controller: Programming Required??

I ordered a new Sauer Danfoss fan controller (#1090409) because my radiator fan was stuck on high speed and replacing the air and coolant sensors didn't correct the issue. I'm now at Cummins in Denver having the new controller installed and the tech here is asking me whether Danfoss programmed the controller before sending it to me. Might anybody know if the controller must be programmed for installation? I assumed that ordering the right part number from Danfoss (via Berendson Fluid Power) would provide what I needed, but the Cummins tech isn't so sure. Might anybody know this answer?

I have had 5 controllers over the years and only one wasn't programmed properly and OMC replaced it right away. Chris Snyder said if they weren't programmed directly from Sauer Dan foss that his experience had been iffy at best. I got tired of them and went with the new wax controller. The coach cooling runs 5 degrees cooler and costs me about .2 tenths of a gallon in MPG but anything is cheaper than having to replace a fan controller every 18 months. TWI 204 Intrigue 11731

My understanding is that the controllers are programmed to specific parameters. You should be good to go. I just replaced mine & it was pre-programmed.

Something else that I forgot to mention: I've been told that 99% of the time it is only the electronic part of the controller that fails. If you replace only that part it is usually much easier & considerably less expensive. That's what I did with mine & it worked.

Your assumption is correct. The part number 1090409 specifies to electrical connectors and the programming. You are good to go.

John, I also did what Fred Compton did, ordering the electronic module only, I installed myself. It was programed properly by the Pt. #.

One suggestion you may want to ask of Cummins. The six (6) wires that exit out of the electronic module exit horizontal to the ground and then the installer allows them to hang down vertically to plug into the mating 6 wire connector. I recommend they "tie wrap" the wires exiting the controller keeping them horizontal.

I found on 2 of my previous controllers that the quick 90 degree turn out of the controller caused over time a short inside the potted controller. Sorry hard to put into words.

Thank you for the quick replies to my question this afternoon. Being able to resolve the question with the tech still working on the coach was wonderful. I also appreciate the tip about purchasing just the electronic portion of the controller... I'll remember that in case needed again. The Cummins tech also agreed that replacing just the electronic module would likely have been all that was needed.
I'm suspecting that I might have been the cause of the damaged module. This past summer I installed a switch up front allowing me to toggle the fan controller on and off while driving when engine temps climb dangerously high. Navigating these Colorado and Utah mountains have challenged my attempts to manage engine RPM to prevent overheating and a few times I needed to pull over and remove the fuse for the fan controller forcing it to high speed which then reduced engine temps immediately. I saw a few posts from people that had installed such switch and it seems a good idea. But perhaps that is the reason my controller stopped working properly.
If and when the controller stops working again, next time I'll order just the electronic module. Thanks for that tip!!

The part number for the electronic portion of your 1090409 is 1090408. The part nomenclature for the six wire controller for the Cummins ISL is:

FDCA: Fan Drive Control Assembly which is the electronic portion and the valve system 1090409 FDC: Fan Drive Controller which is the electronic part only 1090408

Generally, the FDC is all that is required as the hydraulic valve is highly reliable.
