Chassis Battery

Hi everyone,

I had posted a few weeks ago about an inverter problem. Well after a few suggestions on the other post I checked the batteries and they were dead and gone. I run a few dealership service departments so Interstate kindly replaced the chassis battery for me that was only showing 300 CCA vs. the 1400 it should have and now have the house batteries out and doing a slow 2 amp charge and are comming back to life slowly. My question is given the extreme winter cold up here in upstate NY I was told I should run my generator atleast once a month. Does anyone know if I can install just the chassis battery and run the generator and leave the house batterys in my shop charging and warm until I get ready to actually take a trip with the RV in late March.

Thanks as always =_)

YOu can try using the coupling switch tying all the batteries together with the engine running at high idle.  Give the batteries a chance to equalize and then have someone start the generator while you are holding the switch tying all the batteries together.  I don't know if its legal but it worked once for me.  TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

Jump start the generator using your car. Connect the starter cable to the house battery contacts of the coach.

Had the same problem not long after two new starting batteries installed.  Turns out one of the negative terminals was bad on just one of the batteries.  It was not clamping tight due to a small crack.  Replaced terminal, no issues last 3 months.

Just replaced my Chassis battery, Interstate 8D-MHD.  Checked the local Interstate store and they wanted $285 out the door (included tax).  Looked around Tucson and found one through a distributor for about $265.  Called Battery Express, they have a distributor in Tucson (and a bunch of other places).  Got the battery for $225, no sales tax since I paid Battery Express directly in NY.  FYI

Some Additional Information.  Didn't know this when I purchased the battery.  When I got the battery home I noticed it looked Exactly like The Sam's Club battery I was replacing.  Called Interstate (local store) and commented on this.  He said it was the same battery.  Sam's Club warranty is one year free replacement while Interstate is 6 months.  Sam's Club is $200 + tax while the Interstate (at the dealer) is over $250 + tax.  I got the Interstate for the same price out the door as Sam's.  If I had known this I would have purchased the Sam's battery.  The previous Sam's battery I purchased got a 2 year free replacement.  Probably won't matter, all the chassis batteries I've purchased lasted over 4 years.
