CAT LOVERS ONLY

Yahoo Message Number: 7396
No, not Caterpillar lovers, Cat (feline) lovers. Dog lovers use your delete button now!
We have a seven year old male who travels with us and thought it would be a good idea to get a companion for him.

At a nearby shelter we picked out a five month male kitten.
Here is our problem. The kitten has adapted immediately, no worry, no fuss, no problem.
On the other hand, our original cat has become really upset. He doesn't attack but growls and hisses every time the little guy tries to make friends.
We are hoping this pattern of behavior will end soon (it has been two days so far) but if not have to consider returning the kitten as obviously our loyalty is to the original cat who up until now has been an almost perfect companion.

Anyone been through this? Any advice?

Thanks,

David & Karen CA.

I'm answering, although I'm a "dog" person . I know that, with dogs, it's not a good idea to bring a strange dog into your old dog's house. You introduce them on neutral territory (a street corner lot, etc.), then bring both of them into the house together. In your case, it's probably too late for that. So what I strongly recommend is that you go to http://www.rv.net, then to their Pet Health forum, and ask your question of Doctor Deena (sp?), a pet behaviorist. I bet you get a good answer! Let us know.
By the way ... we have friends who travel with two cats in their 5W. Their original cat and one they picked up at a pound several years ago. After a period of adjustment, I understand the cats are pretty good friends now.

Lorene and I have bred Grand Champion Siamese for over ten years and introducing a new cat into your household moving or stable is just a matter of time. There will be some hissing and spitting, perhaps some flying fur, but little damage will occur. The cats with in 4-6 weeks will be best of buddies, jus try to do your best and only mediate the very serious disagreements that happen, let one cat become dominate and the other will naturally become submissive. Try to show equal amounts of attention to both and try not to play favorites.... just like little kids, cats can pick up on that.... we plan to travel with our two "kids' as soon as we pick up our coach..

Hope to meet you someday!

Hi Dave and Karen:

You got to give it some time. As I said in my previous post, we travel with 1 cat, 1 small dog and 1 large dog. The story on the big dog is that last year we got him out of our local shelter for a friends grandson. It didn't work out and we ended up keeping the dog rather than returing him to the shelter. After a summer on the road with all three animals and the fact that he wanted to roam at home we ended up returning him because we felt he needed a place with kids and a large fenced yard. Our shelter is a no kill shelter. After three months we realized we were missing a big chunk out of our lives and Bo had not been adopted. Now he is back home and on his best behavior. The other animals missed him too. It sometimes just takes a little time for things to work out. Good luck.

Kitten, and grown cat should have been introduced to each other at a neutral site and been allowed time to accept one another. Next time try a female. 11731 CAROL

David,

That page is a result of being in Michigan in December. The varnish is drying on my latest woodworking project, so I find myself in the "too much time on my hands" category.
I had picked the graphics up here and there, and just put the page together as I was replying to your post. Anyone who has ever had one of these incredible dogs knows exactly what I mean.
We will be in Vegas mid-January for the Int. Home Builders Show, and I am trying to talk Lenore into heading back that way for FMCA Albuquerque, and the Tuscon pre-rally in March.

We now travel with three pets. A 20yr. old persian cat, a 6 yr. old shitzu/poodle mix dog and a 1 1/2 yr. old lab/sheppard mix dog. The cat had a stroke last year while we we traveling, and is now about 3/4 of a bubble out. Her idea of a good time is to eat and howl.
She has learned to put up with the young dog when needed and the small dog just spends as much time as possible on our laps. In the beginning there were some problems, but now if the big dog tries to sniff the cat the little dog starts barking to let everyone know he is picking on the old lady. The 2 dogs each have their place on the bed and the cat goes to her bed. Funny thing is when something scares them the small dog and cat gather around the big dog for protection.

If you give them some time and space it will all work out. Good luck.
Hope to see everyone at Tucson.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions re our adopted kitty.
I think we are going to re assess the situation on a day by day basis. The big surprise is that Kat is so angry at us for even thinking about bringing a kitten into the house. Up until now he has been very social and non territorial. Just goes to confirm that what we do with the best intentions sometimes backfires big time.
The kitten is doing very well and we hate the idea of returning him to the shelter. He was the last in a litter of nine, undersized and his coat straggly. Now after just two days he has perked up, eats like a piglet and already his coat has started to smooth out and look good.
He obviously wants to stay but if we are unable to establish some harmony inside our regular house there would be no chance in the coach.
