float charging voltage warning

Yahoo Message Number: 99763
Hello everyone

I have been having some battery problems and have discovered the float charge rate on the xantrex inverter (13.7V) is to high and cooked the agm lifelines. I contacted silverleaf  and they didn't add the section to adjust voltage for the rs or sw 3000 inverters so there working on the problem. I had never paid attention to the float charge rate so wanted to alert everyone that the float rate has to be as recommended by the battery manufacture. The previous owner of my coach replaced the battery bank 2/12 on a 08 coach and now I am replacing 2/15 .Lifeline recommends 13.1 to 13.2 on float.

Rod. I have an 06 intrigue 12047 with a RS3000 inverter.  My float volts are 13.7 or 13.8 in Minn and 13.4 or 13.5 in Florida. My understanding is that the temp sensor on the battery lug Adjusts the float  I have selected AGM on the inverter option  My first Lifelines were replaced After 7 years and could have gone longer  My new lifelines perform the same  They are a great Battery which I use for other applications  Bob

Rod............My Xantrex Freedom 458 has done the same thing. The Lifelines are 4 years ol and are not quite toast yet, but their capacity has been severely diminished"‹. There is no visible battery read-out display in my coach. They have been floating at 13.9 volts.
My inverter has an AGM setting which is where I set it at the time I installed the batts, but at some point, it defaulted to the 'Gel 1' setting where it has been since 'whenever'.
I'm bummed that those Deep Cycle 8-D's will not enjoy the long life that I had planned on.
I just ordered a 2 bank smart charger to take the place of the inverter for charging purposes.

Hi Bob

According to lifeline the 13.7 I am set to is not a healthy rate. If you have the xantrex control you can select custom bat setting and lower the float charge. Silverleaf didn't include that option for the rs or even the sw inverter and are looking at a workaround. If they add the feature it will require a software update. This float rate may explain why some guys get over 10 years and some less then three out of there lifelines . One suggestion was to go to a different battery that can take the higher voltage.
