Samsung RF197

Was loving my refrigerator until it iced up. Got a tech out last Sept and he fixed it by installing a longer metal strap down into the drain hose. Worked great until January and it has iced again (and still). I know several have installed this refer anyone with the same problem and a solution?

We have the same problem. Had it looked at and it was dirt in the drain which blocked the drain and caused the ice up, worked for a month. Will have it repaired in a couple of weeks, am told the solution is to place a wire in the drain and attach it to the heater, also the drains from the freezer and icebox need to be trimmed. will let you know.

Not sure if you are all elec. Or have the gas/elec refrigerator but I always recommend getting the Samsung to avoid problems such as this.

Hi John,

Have had the Samsung installed for over 2 1/2 years now and had this problem one time. Turned out to be a very small problem with the door seal not sealing correctly. Might want to make sure the seal is making contact all the way around the door when it's closed and also the center "flapper". Other than this small problem the Samsung has worked perfectly for us.

Barney, thanks for posting this.  I believe we did too, just the freezer, and it was as you described, for us anyway, the door not shut all the way.  Thanks.

Samsung has a fix for this. There is a strap that attaches to the heater coil and goes into the drain hole. The strap is hot (or warm) through induction. There fix is a longer strap which I have and it worked great for several months but now is not working.  It iced up again in Florida.
 I have heard about putting a piece of wire down the drain (copper house wire? How long?) but will it damage the drain?

We're new to the Samsung, our first trip after having it installed. Ours is the replacement unit that followed the RF197. As I understand things, it consumes a bit more energy, and is not quite as big inside. Does anyone know if the model following the RF197 has the same problem?

Will follow this thread to see other corrective actions to resolve, in case it repeats in this follow on model!

I find it interesting that our year old RF197 actual annual energy use mirrors the yellow tag estimate that comes with the new replacement  18 Cu foot refrigeerator that you purchased. Our yellow tag showed an estimated yearly use of 427KW while yours shows an annual use of 594KW. Ours uses about 600KW per year and that is with the ice maker off most of the time.
I think Samsung was a bit conservative on estimated yearly energy use of the RF197.
A leading consumer magazine said some refrigerators used up to 50% more energy than the yellow tag estimate.
