Alert on coolant hoses

Last week, on the way home from Texas, I experienced a HUGE coolant leak. Not sure how much but at least 8 gallons. Made it home and spent quite some time looking for the problem to no avail. Today I took the coach to Rush Peterbilt and after filling with water and pressurizing the tank we found the leak. A coolant bypass hose had rupture in a place that was impossible to see without tank pressure. We had to replace three sections of this hose with a vinyl hose intended for the temperatures of coolant. CC had used fuel hoses that were not intended for such temperatures. They were stamped right on the hose that they were for fuel only. Then of course complete drain and refill with coolant, 12 gallons. $$$$$. So check your coolant bypass hose to save some grief. If it is black it is probably the wrong hose.

we had the same thing happen in NC.  The warning light came on and we were about 2 miles from the campground. We made it to the campground and found the coolant leak.  Lonny found the problem and bought the hose and replaced that portion. What made it so bad was that just 6 months before we had the cooling system flushed and new coolant put in. That coolant had to be replaced. $$$$$$ When we got back to Florida we had all the hoses changed. We also had a problem with fuel hoses going to the generator and had to have those replaced.  Country Coach didn't use the proper hoses.  If anyone out there hasn't changed their hoses I recommend they do so or at least check to make sure the hoses are the correct ones.

'99 Intrigue  stuck on site. Can' t get travel mode. Heard you can manual adjust and lock air in bags by pulling fuse. Anyone successfully done that? Where is fuse and how far can you travel?

I had the same failure last summer. I could not find the leak until I revved up the engine. And it was a fuel hose Instead of a hose for high temp water. Our coach is only 30 units behind yours in production. Hopefully they ran out of that hose and put the correct hose onto the production line.

Did you reset the system? That happened to us and we just reset system and then it leveled out to pull slides in.

You can manually adjust to ride height, then have some pull the fuse for the system in the box located in the outside bay below the driver. We had this happen to us, and it worked to get us to a place where could get a new ride height sensor, which may be your problem.

Here are some things to watch for and some extra features of the HWH air leveling system that may assist you when problems arise. As stated previously the Park brake must be engaged for the leveling system to operate Also if the ignition is on and the Park brake is released, the system will automatically go in to travel mode and raise the coach to ride height. This function can help prevent damage to the coach if sitting to low and moving. The red warning lights on the Touch panel show low air pressure in the Six Pack manifolds in relation to the air bags at the lights location. If any lights are on the coach travel light will not illuminate until air pressure in the manifold increases above the switch set point. If the coach is air system is fully charged, the leveling system turned off, and a red warning light is on, inspect coach for any low points or noticeable air leaks. A stubborn warning light can be a sign of a defective or incorrectly adjusted ride height valve which may need attention. One of the additional features of having the leveling and travel system incorporated together is if a failure of a ride height valve occurs. In this instance the coach can be leveled manual by using the touch panel as described in the leveling operation #4. Raise or lower the coach as needed to achieve a normal front to rear and side to side ride height position. With the touch panel left in the on position locate the chassis fuse panels, normally in the front run bay or under the dash left of the steering column. Using the fuse box legend, find the location of the 1 or 2 fuses marked as HWH, leveling system, or a combination of both. Some late 2000 coaches may have an additional fuse located in the domestic fuse panel located in the bathroom hallway of the coach. Removing these fuses will in most cases kill the touch panel and lock the coach suspension in its current set height. Always check to be sure this is true by disengaging the park brake and moving the coach forward a few feet. This bypass is only recommended for traveling short distances to a repair facility where repairs can be made to

Had the same issue 3 years ago while on the coast of Oregon.  The red over heat lamp came on while the temp gauge said about 205.  We stopped at a little coast side food stand and filled the radiator, when we started the engine we saw fluid going every where.  Fortunately a volunteer fireman came along in his fire department maintenance truck.  He found a piece of hose that would work. , We then went to OMC and Dave Remington replaced all those miniature hoses.  We were about to leave when the genset threw a magnet, but thats another story.  TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731..  Lyle are you coming to the CCFI rally at Buckhorn?  I arrive Sunday from Fredericksburg.

On my 99 Allure, in front of the passenger seat is a panel that needs to be removed to access the HWH system. Pull fuse 7.5 and you should be able to raise the front and back to ride height.  I raise the front first so that my hand on the tire , thumb raised will touch the top of the fender well.  Then do the same for the rear and you should be ok to travel.  The fuse is to be left out.

Tom, I'm surprised that you got and overheat indication at 205. That is a fairly normal temperature on grades. I thought the overheat limit was somewhere around 230. No on the rally. We left Fredericksburg on Monday since the weather report was for a week of rain. Our plan was to stay in the area for another week and maybe go to Buckhorn but no banana. What do you know about the coolant line running from the aft circulation pump to the front of the coach? Lyle Wetherholt

I had no indication, that there was anything was wrong, when the overheat lamp came on, 219 degrees on Cummins, 230 on Cats, so our engines don't shut down right away.  I figure that was because there was still fluid in the tank covering the sensors but the fluid level dropped in the engine causing the red warning light to come on.  Fortunately when I opened the engine cover you could tell there was an issue with coolant everywhere.  When I filled the system and restarted the engine after about 30 seconds you could see water spurting out from the back side of the small hose that attached to the block.

When I lost the rear pump 5 years ago outside Hill City S.D.  I made it to the RV park.  A tech was dispatched  by Coach net,  I had called Chris Snyder for the correct size and he crawled in on top of the engine and went directly from the engine fitting to the splice to the hose to the front.  Chris, Bob, and Eric told me after different other episodes told me those hoses are OK.  BOB replaced the hoses to the hydro hot when at Beaudry,  Eric's guys replaced the hoses for the genset that Cummins ROCKY MOUNTAIN REPLACED TWICE and said the coolant hoses were ok

On my 98 Allure I had a leak and Cummins did a pressure check and couldn't find a leak. It turned out the leak didn't start until the engine cooled  and the piping shrunk. Then the coolant would drip from the lowest fitting on the radiator.  So I crawled under the coach and tightened the spring clamp.  Fortunately the coach didn't have the later to be installed air deflection plate to cut down on raising dust when the fan is in the fast mode.

Sorry we will miss you at the rally,  The sky is over cast this morning  with a patch of blue here and there.  I found out two things on this trip, inspect your Fantastic vent fan gaskets every year.  Doesn't leak while standing still but will when driving in a strong rain, and that rain_x really works.  The front windshield was covered in bugs, when I reached Junction, but by the time I got to Fredericksburg all the bugs on the front of the coach were gone from the light rain and the front windshield was perfectly clean without any water spots. I would like to know what the scum is thats on the highway from Junction to Fredericksburg that coated the sides and rear of the coach and totally covered our CR-V,  TWI 2004 Intrigue  11731  PS. the sun just broke threw.  Here comes the heat.

Everyone should remember also that most of your coaches are 10 years old or older, and they also sit most of the time without coolant flowing through the hoses. That's something you should have pressure tested and/or spot checked anyway. Ten years or more on rubber hoses even if it is the proper hose can wear and get soft.......I wouldn't be to hard on CC over a 10 year old or older rubber hose.

When I had my radiator fail I had all the radiator hoses replaced in 08.  When the CAC failed I had all those hoses replaced in 10.  So the  only hoses of concern left after other issues are the heater hoses to the front.  It doesn't mean a thing now but I was told in 2000 that hoses on my then 98 Allure should be good for 20 years.  Undoubtedly  the brothers changed a few things when they came on board. No wonder the service techs didn't think much of them later on.  TWI 2004 intrigue 11731

Tom, We arrived in Fredericksburg on April 30 via 290 from I-10. Didn't notice any scum on 290. There were acres of Bluebonnets and lots of Indian Paint Brush, Indian Wheel, and may other yellow and red blooms. It was really beautiful.
The trip out was in the rain on April 4. We stopped just off I-10 in Balmorhea for the night during a tornado watch. We unhooked and drove the toad under the overpass for protection. There were three separate thunderstorms with lots of hail. Fortunately no damage to the coach. Tons of rain.

The Blue Bonnets are all gone except for one field on 290 1/2 way between I-10 and Fredericksburg.  The sun broke thru about 11:00 today and now we have light puffy clouds.  But the humidity is so high you can cut it with a knife. We had lunch at Wheelers and peach cobbler for desert at Das Peach House.  Bought  some great bottles of Viognere, while there, too.  Tomorrow were off to Buckhorn, but will be back after the rally.  TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

The fuse you are talking about pulling may be blown,  which would cause your symptom. In which case you could either replace the fuse or merely adjust ride height manually which should stay at the adjusted height with a blown/pulled fuse.  My 7.5 P fuse is located inside a metal box,  under the dash in front of the passenger seat.

Thanks for your (and all the other) helpful responses from this forum. My problem was more complex than just the HWH system. Seems as if my inverter was bad and causing all kinds of electrical malfunctions. Lucky it didn't cause a fire.

No they didn't run out of hose.  At least they still used the damn cheap hose on my 06 Allure and I too have had the water hose brake on me. I have replaced the other lines as well. If you haven't replaced the hoses by now, don't go another mile until you do!

CC not only put on the cheaper hose on my coach, but they had the ECM default set to stop the engine if a problem occurred with it over heating or low oil pressure, or anything else that might damage the engine. They definitely weren't thinking about the safety of the people in the coach that need to steer to a safe place to stop. We were headed south on Highway 215 in California just north of San Bernardino when our hose sprang a leak. If you had been on that 6 percent or more down-grade and your engine stop just as you were making the 90 degree turn at the bottom onto I-10, you too may have to change your drawers!  After fixing the water hose problem, I took the coach into a cetified Cummins dealer in Riverside California and had the ECM default changed to a setting( it cost me $50 plus tax) that would not stop the engine, but would put it into an idle mode so I can still steer and brake and move to a safer place to address a problem. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that if you have ever had your engine go into shut-down mode, or if you are not sure of your ECM default setting, that you have a Cummins dealer check your setting to be sure your engine will not completely shut down.

So, after reading the posts and thinking about what I did not do, it occurs to me that there are probably other hoses that need to be changed. For instance the circulation pump. I know some have bypassed this pump and I would like to get advice on how to do that. The word "bypass" makes it sound like it is more than a simple in on one side and out on the other. Does this pump "T" off of another line that presumably would also need to be changed? Lyle Wetherholt
