Propane bay

HI All

Do all coachs have a propane bay in back of a wheel with no floor.
I wood like to floor the propane bay, with a vent ofcourse.
Any opinions on this.

I am going to install some storage around the tank.

Just as there's a requirement that the propane tank compartment not be key locked, there's probably a requirement for "X" square feet of ventilation opening. But I don't know where to find the spec.
As for storage, someone told me that their motorhome has a shelf above the propane tank that they use to store hose, etc. But I don't know if the shelf was original equipment.

Our Affinity also has no floor in the propane bay. I suspect this is so if there is a leak, propane will fall to the ground, and not make it's way into coach innards. I'm not sure it is a good idea to have items bounce around that may clip a connection or a valve!

The only problem I see is that propane is a heavier gas that settles to the lowest point. By leaving the bay open, inadvertent leaks would not be dangerous since they would disperse out onto the ground. The propane sensor inside the coach is at it's lowest point, along the floor under the sink in my coach. If you closed in around the tank, there would be a potential to accumulate gas in the event of a leak. Seems a bit risky in view of the small amount of storage gained?

I put a wood floor on my Intrigue two years ago and it holds all the cat litter, firewood, folding plastic patio furniture, patio rugs, and a number of other things. My only problem is dust and dirt as I left the center open underneath the tank. You can also put in an upper shelf but it becomes a bit tricky and like the floor, has to be installed in pieces like a puzzle. My pending project list has had an item of mud flap for propane tank bay on it for the better part of a year, but I haven't found a used old truck trailer mud flap to cut up yet.

I welded expanded metal across the hole bottom of the bay. Helps protect the tank and hoses. I did this after running over a 1x4 and finding it lodged in the compartment that night when we stopped........ all the venting you need and a little storage to........Mac.

I put a small tray on each end of the propane tank. It gives a little extra storage for stuff that is already dirty.

My two cents worth...it is not a good idea to put in wood or the like for a floor in the propane tasank compartment. It has been left open for ventilation and if you close it in you may even void your insurance. You could install a metal mesh trayand/or shelf and it would still provide ventilation. Then make sure you do not fill the shelf/tray with solid objects that block the circulation. A coach I owned sometime ago had a mesh tray on each side of the tank in that compartment OEM. Dale

You're right. They are left open for a purpose. I thought their was some kind of fire law or code that the propane bay had to be left open.I am almost sure it would void your insurance.
Just like while driving through some tunnels is not allowed if you have propane on board.
It also creates a problem while filling the tank, the tank has to unattached like your gas grill tank or if the tank is installed like in a motorhome the bottom area has to opened to vent.
NOT a good idea to close this area up.

Everything in My BOOM bay are tired down and will not move....... From my trucking experience of a driver always secure their load..
