Mattress upgrade

What is the general consensus of the group regarding the most comfortable mattress? We want to upgrade our original foam mattress, but we don't know what to buy. Has anyone had any experience with the Tempurpedic (sp?)? All suggestions will be appreciated.

We just ordered a 2004 Intrigue without a mattress. We think we will get a Select Comfort mattress. They make a special Queen size for RV's - 60" x 75". This #4000 mattress has dual chambers - with two controls wired to a pump. I found out that if I purchase an "Imperial Mattress pad" we will have the comfort of the #5000 series. Questions: 800-424-2527, 800 SLEEP NUMBER, or www.selectcomfort.com We will be sure to let some air out when we go up in elevation, and put air in when we go down in elevation.
We stayed at a hotel recently that had Tempurpedic- two comments: if you lie still it is very comfortable. If you toss during the night you will find it hard to turn. My objection to is was that it was way too hot. My husband could not turn easily and therefore woke up every time he wanted to turn.

We have Select Comfort in both our house and our coach (in the normal queen size). It really helps my husbands bad back and its nice to sleep on the "same bed" regardless of where you are.

Jon, we have a Select Comfort at home, and an Feather Edge (Egret model) in our Allure. We enjoy both. I believe the problem with the Select Comfort is the separate pump which you must find a place to hide, and the high price. The Egret has the two pumps built in, is cheaper, and the factory will make it to your specs (length, width, and radius of corners if desired). The Select Comfort has the "sleep by the numbers" and a quiet pump if you need to adjust during the night. The Egret has a fast noisy inflater which you probably only want to run when getting into bed the first night in camp. Egret is easy to quickly deflate with the inflate/deflate rocker switch for each side of the bed. Let some air out of any airbed before travelling over a mountain pass. First night into camp, I inflate to firm and deflate for 2 seconds -- no more that 5- 10 second operation.

http://www.rv-tech.com/egret.htm shows the Feather Edge bed on the web and sells them. Candace Hollick [cdhollick@...], on this forum, is who I purchased my Feather Edge Egret from -- understand that she has sold many hundreds of them.

We ended up buying a Chatam and Wells mattress for our Affinity. With the 20-inch depth, we have to watch our heads, but it is super comfortable--the wife swears by it!

I also purchased my Feather Edge from Candy. Great service and a very nice bed. I was going to park in the drive way of some friends in Colorado for a few days. I had the bed shipped there, then they took to old mattress to Goodwill, church or someplace like that for me.

We have a Select Comfort at home and a Feather Edge in our Beaver for the same reasons that have been suggested: The Feather Edge is less expensive and it has the pumps built in so you don't have to worry about where to put the pump and the tubing. Works great for us. We have the Elite model Feather Edge and bought it from www.rv-tech.com. Tell Curt that I sent you!!

Per,

So, is a 4' step ladder long enough to climb into bed?

Just and FYI...we didn't care for the Tempurpedic mattress we had for a year before we moved into the RV as Fulltimers. It was clammy and hot. If you put a thick mattress pad on it to eliminate those problems you lost a lot of the reason you bought it. We put a premium lambswool top on the mattress that came with our Intrigue and are happy so far, but we tried the Select Comfort when at the CC rally in Eugene and liked it a lot. Just didn't want to give up the space that the motor requires. The "Egret" mentioned here sounds like something we'll take a look at. Thanks for starting the thread! Jan McNeill

When we purchased our used CC we found the mattress unusable. We shopped mattress dealers as we wanted an innerspring mattress. We were surprised at how many would make pretty much whatever we wanted--size, shape & stiffness. They did charge a small fee for a special order, but it was only $40. Been very happy.
