We came by that accident as we were headed out of town toward Arizona. Traffic was snarled for nearly two hours. Those poor folks, a family of 10 were in a rented motor home from Washington state. It looked like a gas rig, probably a 32' class A. The accident was apparently caused by a combination of factors, as usual.
The primary cause appears to have been the wind. The location was at the point of the mountain where heavy winds are common. A storm was moving in and apparently the motor home was hit by a gust that caused the driver to go over the guard rail and into the center medium. As only bad luck would have it, there was a bridge structure for an underpass where they went over. The motor home went air-borne into the bridge structure and flipped over after nosing into the side. It looked like someone had dropped an egg.
Other factors may have been the inexperience of the driver in a rented rig. Who knows? Also, we all know that seat belts are a common problem in motor homes. With 10 people on board it's probable that few were belted in, although I doubt it would have helped with the severity of the impact and the disintegration of the rig.
Only three children survived. A tragedy indeed. Our reminder: Drive safely, watch out for wind and weather. Stop if conditions are not favorable.
