Brakes

Tried to move our coach this morning and it appears that my right front brake will not disengage. I moved a couple feet but the right tire was just plowing the ground. Tried to move backward and forward a few times, but that didn't work either. Any ideas?

Tom, I don't see that you've received any responses so far. This sounds very serious, and Mike and I hope you aren't out somewhere trapped now. Our coach though it's a 2006 Inspire has a number very close to yours, 51784. We have no idea of anything to offer though my husband did say something about air lock and brakes but said he didn't know enough to respond with any ideas.

I had the same thing happen on my 04 Allure on the tag on drivers side. Made a horrible streaking noise and then I saw the tread marks on the pavement in my mirror. I was taking it out for the first time out of winter storage and there's a bus garage next door. Mechanic heard it and came over. Had me raise the tag and pull forward then told me to lower it, put in reverse and give the gas. Same noise for a bit then it finally broke loose after about 5 feet. Had the inspector on board with me doing a test drive for the extended warranty I had just purchased lol

First build up air pressure , release parking brake (make sure you block wheels so you do not roll) the turn off engine listen for air leaks, second if there are no air leaks, press foot brake down three or four times quickly to free up brake, try to move coach. If this doesn't work you might have a rolled cam on your brake you would need a mechanic to inspect

If your coach sits high enough look at your slack adjuster. There is a housing that houses a pancake if you will, and air pressure pushes a rod from the pancake housing, the fairly flat big round thing through an arm that goes to the brake shoes. If you can safely look from the top of the wheel and behind the wheel down towards the ground you will see it. The front brakes don't have air springs which are your parking brakes. By hand you should be able to move the slack adjuster somewhat forward and back. Chances are this may be your problem but not sure. Give it a rap with a hammer to release it. You will have to determine which way is braking and which direction is release. You also could have the shoes stuck which isn't normal either as they should be retracted when the brakes aren't pressed on, not including the parking brake. You may have a broken spring not allowing the shoes to retract and when sitting for a period the shoes could have rusted to the drum. If you can look at the rear of the drum and determine what happened you should be able to figure it out. Also if you can gently get it to pavement that will break the rust barrier and allow you to get to a shop.

I broke the chair base of the recliner about a year ago and thru it away. Now I cannot remember what the base looked like.

If the coach is aired up, try taping the foot brake until the air is gone from the system then fire it back up and build pressure and see if they release. Never seen a front wheel lock up .but sometimes simple little things will work

I think they were made by Villa International. You might be able to call them and send them a photo of your chair and they may have a base. Also check with Countryside Interiors in Junction City OR. We bought a new recliner from them and they may be able to get you a base replacement.

Looked at my tire marks again this morning, looks like I pulled forward about 12' before brake locked up. Tried moving again and also tapping the brakes several times. No luck.
We are at home, so we are not on the road with this problem. Don't know of anyone in my area for mobile repairs. We are located off I75, 2 miles from the FL line if anybody knows someone in this area. We do have a Camping World, Alliance RV, and another one in town.

Your brake locked up after rolling freely? I would look in the book or online LOL, for a good truck shop with road service. Either a name brand shop like mack or peterbuilt etc. or a good local truck shop with a mobile unit. Sounds like you may have a bigger problem if your brake is seizing up after rolling. Is there oil in the hub? Can you look behind the wheel and look inside the drum?

I had a front brake lock up on a previously owned Motorhome. I bleed the air off at that wheel, at the hose connection it released and I never had any trouble after that. It's forth a try.
