Full Width Mud Flap

Yahoo Message Number: 104147
I have a 2002 CC Allure, #30690. While in for service, my full width mud flap disappeared. It was on the coach when it went in, and not on when service was completed. Service company is accepting responsibility for loss, but I wonder if anyone has or knows of a used full width mud flap for my coach. It was 13" wide by 96" long. Had the metal Country Coach lettering. After contacting CC and finding out that it would cost about $1400 to get a new one through CC and that is without the lettering.

Also, if someone has a coach in my year or around it, I need to have some pictures to show the mechanic how it was attached to the coach. It is not readily apparent without the flap being on the coach. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank You.

If this looks the same as yours (did), I can take some close ups of how it hangs. I know it hangs from locking hooks (not sure what they're called) and there is a long narrow metal strip to stiffen the rubber flap. Zoom in for close up.

I paid $672 for a new one from Duraflap in Oregon and that was installed. Hang it from the frame with chain.

Gordon,

I have a different year model then you and I have been lucky enough to bend up 2 of them because the way it was mounted to my coach. Mine was mounted with 2 "HINGES". Very poor design as when the coach was lowered for leveling, if the ground was not level, one hinge would go toward the front of the coach and the other tried to go to the rear. Resulting in a bent mud flap. Mine had a solid type polished chrome metal strip the entire length of the flap. Do not have it mounted with "hinges".

Hi John,

Yes, it looks like mine. Would really appreciate some closeups of how it is mounted. Thanks for your help.

I want to thank all of you who responded to my rear mud flap issue. I really appreciate all the pictures, and suggestions. I have passed the information on to the person who is going to replace the mud flap and I am sure your input will be helpful to him. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Gordon,

Sorry not to respond sooner but I would advise against hanging the rear flap from chains. While traveling in Alaska we saw several rigs that had extensive damage to the toad because of gravel flying OVER the top of the flap.

On our 2000 Allure there is a piece of angle iron that spans the entire rear of the coach and the flap is attached to it eliminating the open gap. I think that your vintage of coach was probably set up the same.

If you need more info I can send pictures directly to you.

If anyone wants to see this or our Delta faucet we are at Fountain of Youth Spa about 40 miles SE of Indio, CA for the season.

Another option if it is not too late, is to leave it off. Use the money for something else you want to improve or replace on the coach. I know of a person who has traveled to and from Alaska in his 1999 Country Coach Allure 9 times and a trip up and down the Dalton highway to the Artic Ocean twice. He removed it because all the rocks and gravel it kicked up about destroyed his towed vehicle. After taking it off, he saw a dramatic delcine of damage on his towed car while on gravel roads. After seeing this first hand, I too am going to remove that old heavy piece of rubber and see if the results match his. If your still looking for a flap I think he still has his in his airplane hanger but shipping from Alaska is you know very expensive....

We removed our flap at least 4-5 years ago and think that it runs a couple of degrees cooler, and we also think our mileage is a little bit better. Plus we don't have to worry about leveling and getting it hung up. In addition, not a single stone chip on our car since removing it.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy Hanukkah to all!

ours came loose going down a hill and we decided to leave it off. Just something pretty to worry about. We saw no difference in dings on our toad either. We also think that it improved our mileage.

When I went to Alaska and had my full mud flap on, this is what I got on the area between the hood and window glass. So I'm not sure how good the mud flap is/was...

I got these rocks between Destruction Bay (Yukon Terr) and Tok, Alaska.

Our experience was the same after removing the mud flap - cooler running engine, slightly increased fuel mileage, and no increase in rock damage. We do use Roadmaster's Guardian Rock Guard on the front of the toad. Getting ready for our second trip to Alaska.

Unless the flap is dragging on the ground and kicking up rocks and debris, how do you account for more rock damage to the toad WITH the full width mud flap than WITHOUT the flap??? Just asking.

Steve,

For me I can not answer that question. I thought with a full mud flap and hang down not more than 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the ground, I would not have gather all those rocks. I did have a windshield protector on my toad so no damage to it. Although I did suffer over $8000 damage to the toad ( according to the insurance company).
I would be interested if the next trip to Alaska without it, I get the same type of rock collection. Currently I have a Blue Ox screen between the coach and toad.

This is a good question that gets to the issue of evidence to support contentions and the laws of physics.

I'd like to give a different take on the issue of the Country Coach mud flap. To me it is one of the most beautiful aspects of a Country Coach. I love seeing that bright shiny chrome plate bearing the name "Country Coach," and it is something I enjoy looking at frequently. I would never consider removing it.

The material they are made of is not very impressive. If they get fuel on them they will soon fail. Mine failed and a friend in the conveyor belt industry sent me a roll of belt which I custom cut to make a new one. It is much better material and has cord in it.

It's just a matter of preference. In my life learning stems mostly from trial and error. I personally am not in love with the mud flap nor carrying around an for country coach. I see others gain improved fuel economy and cooler engines with less rock damage on rough roads, I'll give it a try myself. If the results don't match up I'll put it back on.

I just ordered and received an ultra guard flap to replace my torn flap. Under $100 free shipping Amazon, it's 1/2 " thick, combination of rubber and nylon. I'm quite impressed. Looking forward to installing all the CC chrome and mounting it.

I removed my CC Mud Flap before our trip to Alaska. For some of the reasons already covered.

I still get small pieces of gravel gathering at the base of our CRV Toad, but I'd put it at about 75% less then I would find with the mudflap on. Thought about chaining it up a bit higher, as some have done. But with the coach having flaps behind the tags too - I felt it was partially redundant.

The other reason I removed it, is that the brackets that hold them on, had to be partially removed to get access to drop the Air Filter cover to replace the cartridge.

If anyone would like mine, I can make them a heck of a deal:)! And, would rather see it being used, then just collecting dirt on the side of our home...

Best to all,

Smitty

The problem is you have one of the later model mud flaps that hangs from chains. The earlier model mud flaps are attached with angle iron, have heavy weighted cast Country coach lettering and additional chromed weights and the rubber is heavy conveyor belt rubber. They very effectively stop all kinds of things from hitting your toad, trust me. A flap flying around on chains is next to useless. I cannot speak to fuel economy in this context, but in that regard the front end is a far bigger issue than the rear end I am sure.
