Route 101

I plan on driving Rt 101 from Bandon, Oregon to Santa Barbara, CA. in early June, final destination is Phoenix. Are there any sections of this route that I should avoid? If so alternate route suggestion are appreciated.
I also plan on stopping at or near the following locations Leggett, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Palm Desert, CA. so any suggestions on RV Parks & Campgrounds would also be welcome.

The 101 is a beautiful drive from the top of Oregon down through Santa Barbara.

Santa Cruz is a bit off the 101 and out on the 1. When you get to Santa Barbara area camp spots become limited. Ocean Mesa a bit above with full hookups, El Capitan state Park with no hookups.

If coming during the summer anything near the beach from Buellton south will be booked far in advance, Ocean Mesa is pricey so may have openings.

How far do you plan on driving each day? Those of us that live along the way may be able to recommend good stopping points.

We belong to TTN so stay in Cloverdale just off the 101 at Russian River NACO resort and TT Palm Springs just off the I-10 in Palm Desert.

Here in Ventura County one of our favorites is Lake Casitas near Ojai, just up the 33 from Ventura.

If you venture onto Hwy 1, which is more scenic, you might want to pick up a Trucker's Atlas, there are some sections of both roads with length restrictions.

If you head west to 1 at Leggett CA off 101 you will find the road well paved, forested, with lots of trees most the way to the coast. It is twisty and slow but worth it. 1 South from there is loaded with scenic beauty and little towns with interest. It is mostly 2 lanes, and well traveled. One of our favorite camp grounds is Ocean Cove about 10 miles below Sea Ranch. There will be teeny store on your left opposite an old wooden barn on your R just before a sharp R turn. Park in front of the barn and go over to the store to register. You will be dry camping on barely improved land overlooking the ocean, and if you walk south along the ocean you will find gate into a county park that allows you to continue for a mile or so with little beaches and overlooks.

There quite a good little eatery and bar behind the store connected to a motel. Good food and a view but a slight walk from the campground.

Never had a problem finding site, though midweek is the best.

Hi George, we've done that exact route several times, you will want to take 19th Ave south of the Golden Gate and Traverse the downtown area a lot less traffic best to do it on a weekend.

You do not have to travel HWY 1 in RV (though doable - more fun in car) We just finished trip from San Fransisco north to the Oregon / Washington boarder on 101

this past year. We would camped on 101 for a few days. See things on 101 and would go over to travel north and south on HWY 1 in car. We would then hook up car and travel up 101 some more and repeat the north and south car trip again. In many places where HWY 1 and 101 are the same.
North or South ( your choice ), it is a must do trip for everyone. Take your time and enjoy it.

Do not forget the jet boat raid up the Rogue River at Gold Beach, OR ( about 30 miles north of Calif. boarder ) JiminTex

I grew up in the Eureka area (Arcata) and still visit often to see family, and I went to Oregon State. I vote for September. There is less traffic and the best weather.

As far as timing I would expect when you want to be in Phoenix to be the guide for the trip.
Winter northern CA gets more rain and the associated issues with rock and debris on the roads. The sea can be gorgeous though too during those times.
Once below Paso Robles the weather is fairly mild until you start getting out into the desert beyond Ontario and then for summer time it warms up fast like Phoenix.

Sure agree with Jimintex: Do the the jet boat trip that leaves from the south side of the Rouge River just below the bridge! Sit in the last row where you can lean against the pilot station. It is dryer and has the best view.

I traveled the full length of HWY 1 many times as a kid. But only made the entire trip North and South only once with My Ford Crew Cab and 35' 96" wide Airstream travel trailer . The are some turns and bends I wouldn't recommend for a wide body MH much longer than 34'. I admit I have followed short 18 wheeler delivery trucks on the coast road and watching them hang 1/2 a dual off the pavement more often than not while crossing the center line with the steer tires didn't make me comfortable. I've driven the full length of 101 from LA to Astoria any number of times and its a pretty easy drive except for a few areas in the Redwoods and between Crescent City, Ca. and Florence. Oregon. in my 42' coach. There are a few areas where if you have to pass Folks riding their pedal bikes, you'll have to slow almost to a stop if there is on coming traffic as there is no room. One time I had to force a rider off the shoulder when an 18 wheeler crossing the center line came out of a blind corner. I stopped down the road to apologize to the rider, fortunately he was "cool" with the episode. TWI 2004 42' Intrigue.

We left Texas in late May. By the time we arrived in Santa Rosa (just north of Sanfran ) it was early June.
Stayed at the Fair grounds in Santa Rosa - full hook ups. We had done the southern part of HWY 1 the year before.
As I said, we went S to N. and started in the Sanfran area this time. By going north - we stayed ahead of warm weather.
Central Calif. can have hot days and cold nights later in the summer.
From a little north of Santa Rosa on north we had little traffic.

It may be warm by the time you get there - but I recommend spending a few days in Paso Robles. In town is a fine mission. North of town there are 2 (1 in the middle of a military base - but you can still get access) There are some fine RV parks in the area and more wine than in Napa - good
tasting.

Jim's suggestions are good. Note that the missions are in Jolón (southwest of King City on a good local road through Hunter Ligget Military Reservation) and in San Miguel, about six miles north of Paso Robles. If you are a Harvest Hosts member, you can probably find a good dry camping spot at one of the local wineries.
