I'm having trouble with the door steps opening on my 96' Intrigue, coach #10151. If they open they will close. Can someone tell me what the trigger is to initiate the step opening? Thanks for your help, Stuart

Our steps have been operating erratically..... on the road I had to drop the access plate clean everything and they still no go . I was very flustered . I had to unhook the linkage and hold the steps in with rubber bungee cords. what a jam with the steps extended. Later I bypassed the controller using a hot wire to operate the steps and finally a momentary switch as a temporary fix. I am going to replace the motor, controller and magnetic switch as a complete unit once we get home. We bought a two step ladder just in case the motor freezes up and quits working. The linkage also needs to be cleaned and lubricated on a regular basis.

Don't mess with this old stuff replace with new parts and be trouble free ( in theory )

If you need to replace the switch. BTW there is a check out procedure in the manual. If you get one from Kevin make sure you know if it's NO or NC. The one used is a SPST momentary.

I've replaced ours twice. Bought a push button "momentary" SPDT switch at local electronics store. Kwikee changed the design at some point that changed the switch from a NC to a NO. Using a SPDT will accommodate either of the Kwikee designs. The switches I've purchased had metal push buttons. Check the length of the throw to make sure they will work. I've found that most common push buttons will work.

FYI:

SPST: Single pole single throw

SPDT Single throw double pole
NO: Normally open
NC: Normally closed

An example is a car door switch, it's actually a SPST NC. When the door is open the switch makes contact and provides voltage to the lights.

Momentary: Push button to chance state, release to ho back to previous state. If it's not momentary then it's push on, push off. (Don't get this one)

You can take the motor to your auto parts store and save money the spring loaded momentary switch can also be purchased locally

The problem I had my step parts were obsolete so I have to replace both motor and controller I will not be home for another 6 weeks I am not going to mess with it until I get home I used the check out procedure which is fairly basic

I was having intermittent step actuation and called Kevin for a new switch. His recommendation was spot on. Clean the contact points and then I also adjusted the length of the individual pins. No problems since.

Don't know if it is the same, and I'm a newbie here, but I've read about hitting on the actual step motor a few times with a wrench or something similar. For whatever reason, this works a lot of the time. My new to me Affinity had the issue once. Called Harry Lockwood and he recommended a few taps on the motor, and presto, step went back to going in and out and hasn't recurred yet.

Years ago I was having a problem with my step on a Tiffen motor home. It was doing the same thing. Had to go to the Tiffen factory for an unrelated matter and got them to check it. They replaced the "brain"and it seemed to be working fine but by the time we got back to Asheville .it was doing the same thing again .I called Kwikee and got some engineer on the phone that sounded like he may have installed steps on Noah's Ark and he told me to lube it .I told him I usually used WD 40 on mine .and he told me not to dare using that "s---" on the Kwikee step as it would do nothing but gum it up. Went to MYB for a few days, still using a step that we carried with us. Checked in at the camp ground, came back out And the coach would not move (A malfunction in the vacuum emergency brake system) .Called road service and they towed me to Sonny's RV service in MYB and they had the brake to where it would release and the drive shaft reinstalled in just a short while, so I asked the guy that had done the work for me if he knew anything about the steps and told him what it was doing. He went inside and came back with a gallon of WD40 with a sprayer attached to it. He must have used 3/4 of the gallon on that step.I mean he saturated every thing that was even close to that step Then he grabbed the step in a bear hug and manually twisted and pulled at it for I guess five minutes or more and then told me to try it .I did and it worked and was still working when I traded the motor home some eight years latter. Now I ain't saying this will fix your's but they do need lubed!!

I think what I am going to do is install a new motor an inside momentary switch and see how this works for a season. I do keep the linkage and tracks clean and liberally greased. I havn't priced a new brain box or magnetic switch, but I am not going to worry about this until winter. Thanks for the input

You need to repair or replace the button switch near the bottom of your door.
