2006 Magna TV cabinet question

I have an Apple TV as well, but haven't mounted it yet. There are a couple issues I'm thinking about.
1.) Network Access. Is it easier to point the Apple TV to my phone as a tether or put in a wireless router so I can bridge the router to whatever WIFI signal I want (campground or tether)?
2.) HDMI Input access. On my coach just getting access to an HDMI output on the TV is a huge, huge problem. Basically I have to drop the TV just to access the input. I have an HDMI running from the TV to the receiver. Into the receiver I have all of the inputs for DVD Player, Direct TV so I'll probably connect the Apple TV to the receiver and let it feed through the receiver to the TV to avoid having to drop the TV as well as being able to get full surround sound via the receiver.

We use our Apple TV a lot, so I did the Ubiquity Edge Router with POE that supplies wifi in and around the coach and POE (power over ethernet) for the Ubiquity Picostation M2 HP antenna on the roof; the antenna on the roof is what gets wifi from the park and delivers it to the coach. I followed the reasoning of David from the RV website "Outside Our Bubble," but I installed a slightly more powerful omni directional antenna on the roof so that I don't have to mess with pointing it. Please take a few minutes to watch his video, it will be a great help. I just upgraded the equipment slightly form his basic system, but not as far as his high end system that costs about $400.

As David says, "it is good to have strong ears, and a loud voice." This means that the equipment on your coach listens better and transmits better wifi signals than any of your handheld and portable computer devices. All you need to do then is connect your coach to your cell data source as a default for driving down the road and when you have wifi at a park or from Starbucks 7 blocks away you tell it to connect to that. One of the requirements was that my wife didn't like having to enter pass codes and connect to these other places - this way she's always connected.

In our coach we have a wifi network that is always on, it connects the Apple TV, Denon AV receiver, HP printer and all of our computers and phones seamlessly. So, if an RV Park has poor wifi service and you have a good antenna on your roof you can usually find another data source. I was in a county park awhile back and got wifi from the coffee shop almost a half mile away.

If I had it to do over again, I might install an even stronger antenna on the roof like the Ubiquity Bullet 2 HP. All of this is adjustable to your budget and the performance you're looking for.

Just a question about what you wrote. Most RV parks do not want you using their WiFi system to stream movies and such, due to their small or limited WiFi system bandwith. I'm thinking that if you got 1/2 dozen or so different RV's downloading or streaming movies, wouldn't that slow down the most Wifi systems in RV Parks?

If you pay for streaming on your own device, go for it. But for those of us, that use the Rv Parks WiFi systems just to communicate, check on weather and roads it can be irritating when it takes minutes to load a page.

Hi Dave,

Good point; sounds like your concerned about your fellow campers, me too! I would hate to restrict somebody out of their email and web browsing connection. That's the beauty of this system, rarely if ever do I waste my time with the RV parks wifi; it is usually so poor that streaming TV is constantly interrupted. So all of this to say, its probably not me affecting your ability to get your business done. If we do get stuck with the RV park's poor wifi, we use our Verizon Jetpack instead; I don't like waiting to do my email and get things done either...

Typically when we pull in we usually see 40 to 70 wifi access points outside of the park, with about 10 to 15 of them being accessible without a password. But technically speaking, if I'm understanding this correctly, our one connection that is well managed by our system (strong enough connection to not waste bits and good traffic management) typically uses less bandwidth (only about .012 megabits per minute for Netflix or AppleTV SD streaming) and creates less traffic load than somebody connecting their 2 cell phones, an iPad and a laptop in their RV to the RV parks access points for playing games, email syncing, and web browsing.

Wouldn't it be great if the RV parks paid another $200 per month and really delivered good internet access? They want to advertise it, but they rarely deliver good service - so it doesn't matter what everybody else in the park is doing, it still sucks. All of this to say that there's a lot of good wifi out there for us with the right system...

Thanks Michael. I have a Ubiquity outdoor antenna on my lake place and we can cover almost an acre and a half. That sounds like a great plan. My wife is like yours. She just wants it to work.

Hi Jim,

This makes life simple, once you set it up with your computer, you can use your phone, tablet or computer to connect to the park's wifi or any wifi. When we were in Williams, AZ for the train to the Grand Canyon, we were using the Walmart McDonald's wifi about .25 miles away - we were a customer, since we had shopped there. The beauty is that all of your other devices connect to your coach wifi automatically.

Thanks Walter, I agree, using a good VPN service is probably the only way to protect yourself. I wouldn't trust RV park wifi any more than I trust any wifi outside my home network...

Securing your data is a whole other subject from getting connected, albeit a good one that needs sincere consideration.
