Gonna buy a new Toad

Time has come to purchase a new towed Vehicle. Presently have a 2006 Envoy and like it, no longer available. It's easy to set up, transfer case in neutral, transmission in park, no locking steering wheel so ignition is off. Considering the following: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4 door, Jeep Cherokee, GMC Canyon Crew Cab, GMC Terrain.

Presently favoring the Wrangler Unlimited but somewhat uncertain of the Jeep brand, have owned GMC products for a long time and have had really good luck with them, especially the Envoy. 2nd choice would be the Canyon but really don't need a pickup. May consider Cherokee (wife doesn't particularly lie it). Terrain ia 2 wheel or all whee drivel, that kinda concerns me towing 4 down.

Any comments pro and Con would be greatly appreciated. Especially concerning the Wrangler. Neither of us want a car as we do take some dirt roads and I basically don't like cars. In the end the decision will probably between the Wrangler and the Canyon but keeping an open mind at the moment.

We purchased a new 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara (silver) with the (automatic transmission, navigation, off road package which included the locking rear differential and stock Sahara wheels and tires) in September of 2016; they were making some great deals then. We have really enjoyed it both as a towed and as an everyday driver. It is slightly awkward to get in and out of, but we drive it back and forth between Sacramento and our home in San Diego quite a bit and it works great. Both my wife and I like driving it. It does ride a little rougher than our 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser and there is more wind noise, both contribute to driving closer to the speed limit. We love the utility of the thing we can carry grand kids, friends, or fold the seats down and a lot of stuff. As a towed, we don't even know its back there - we bought the M&G kit, but haven't installed it yet and use a BlueOX Aventa tow bar. Its easy to prepare to tow; put the transfer case in neutral, parking brake off (another story), and ignition off, no steering lock to worry about. It only has about 16,000 driving miles on it and about 3,500 towed miles, but so far it has been mechanically sound with no problems with the vehicle, just don't care for the Jeep dealer "hype" and lack of understanding how to take care of a customer...

We have a modified (AEV JK350) 2015 Wrangler Unlimited and love it. We got it last May. Meets all our needs and we have had a few fun trips with 4WD clubs. It is big enough to meet our needs. Fuel mileage is mediocre at best (and worse with our large tires and wheels as well as 4.10 axle ratios.). We were worried about reliability too and time will tell but no problems so far.

If you decide on a JKU, you can buy a lifetime warranty for the Jeep. Do not buy the warranty from the dealer. Go to the wrangler forum and you can find a link to a Jeep dealer in Michigan than will sell you the warranty for about $2,500. This is a non-transferrable warranty but you can have two names on the warranty. Did it for my 2016 JKU and put the grandsons name for the second name. No problem even though he is only 6. As for the Jeep mine is still too new to determine the outcome but so far I am satisfied with it, especially the way it hooks up and toes.

We have a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and love it. It doubles as our daily driver, so it is not just a toad. Seems very well built, luxurious and quiet inside, tows easily 4 wheels down, seems to be the right size for errands around town. Obviously, it is not for hard core off-roading, so if you are looking for that I would go for the Rubicon.

Even though not fond of Fiat, the Wranglers are great toads and hold a very high resale. Be prepared to drop close to $50K (prices have risen about $10K in last few years) on a well equipped new Unlimited. New Pentastar power seems to do ok. I'd stay away from 6 speed manual trans as it does not hold up well to abuse (was used in Chrysler Crossfire and small Mercedes delivery vans). Easy to set up and tow!

I am getting ready to set my 2014 Grand Cherokee up for towing behind my 2006 Country Coach and am trying to determine if the Coach has separate bulbs for the stop and turn signal functions. The wiring is different depending on how it is wired. Do you know the answer?

Normally separate bulbs are used when you have amber turn signals. But the easy way to check is do the same lights come on for signal and brake? There are a few vehicles out there, very few, that have separate with all red lights.

My 2006 Allure does have separate bulbs for the brake and turn signals. But has been converted during manufacture to function as a combined system for purpose of wiring for a toad. If you hit the brake both the brake signal and turn signal are hot at the coach plug. That is about the limit of my knowledge on the subject but I did need to know the answer to wire my new tow vehicle.

Sounds like the adapter to bring it back to "normal" is part of the harness for the trailer plug, often on autos supplied as part of the towing package.

I have been towing a Jeep Wrangler since 2006. Last Year updated to a 2014. Good Dependable rigs. You must remember that Jeep is not a luxury vehicle. It is just a utility. Yes the newer ones have all the bells and whistles in electrical options but it is still just a rugged utility vehicle and I love mine. Check the towing manual for directions No more disconnecting the negative batteries cable. Good luck on your quest for a new tow SUV.
