We recently changed from 12R's to 295/80's, so that we'd have other tire options to choose from. (8.25" rims, or I would have considered 315/80's too.)
The short of it? We went with the FMCA Michelin tire program, and bough Michelin XZA2 tires. If you want to save a few bucks, IMO, also use the FMCA program for BG Goodrich ST230's on the rear (Made by Michelin, so FMCA program works on them too.), with XZA2's on the steers.
I have gone from 8 XZE*'s 12R tires. A robust tire, with extra meat in the sidewalls. So I felt for our first set on our used to us 40' coach, it would allow some 'OOPS!' lessons of adjusting to the 40' vs 28' Bounder we had before:)! Lost two of the XZE*'s to pot holes in California. Tire shortage at the time from Michelin, so ended up with two ST230's. Put them on the Steers. An improvement in front end, where you notice it the most, ride comfort, and quieter too. When we went to the 295/80's, I put the still relatively new ST230's on our Tag. The XZA2's are another improvement in ride quality on the front end. Both in noise, and ride comfort.
And, if you want to save even more money. Many RV'ers with like coaches, gave me very positive feedback on Hankook's. AH11/AH12's depending the size you go with. Me? I'd still go with the XZA2's on the steers, but have zero question about putting Hankook's on the rear positions. (And by the way, many I know have them all around, and speak very highly of them in all positions.)
And to Don's posts - nothin wrong with the Continentals, a respected and well thought of tire. But, they are pricey:)!
And I have no feedback on the Goodyears for you.
Best,
Smitty
