Dodged the Norcold bullet!

Yahoo Message Number: 112229
This is a copy of what I posted on Monacoers. I don't post much here but wanted you to have this info also:::

Will try to keep this fairly short

We have been smelling a little dead rat smell, slight, close to the Norcold. Kept smelling around and could not find exactly where the smell was coming from. Really didn't think about the refer because it was not a sulfur or ammonia smell. Well this morning the little black box had shut the Norcold down.

Went out and tried to re-set the black box with the magnet trick.. No luck so I did what I have done in the past when I had a bad revision "B" back a few years and bypassed it with a 20 amp fuse stuck in the wires off the little black box. Only I got the wrong wires and sparked them which blew the fuse in the big black box... so I opened that box and replaced the 5 amp fuse in there. and jumpered the correct wire on the Little Black Box ( red and blue or in and out) and the refer ran and it seemed to run fine. No yellow residue and at first no smell. Then a very slight ammonia smell but ever so slight so I wasn't going to walk away from it and was standing about 20 feet away talking with a friend when I looked up at the roof vent for the refer and it was blowing smoke like a chimney fire. Went over and grabbed a fire extinguisher and tried to put it out, bright flames coming out of the combustion chamber on the refer, but I wasn't making a dent in a VERY hot fire. Then I stabbed the combustion chamber with a screw driver to get access and sprayed into that hole and finally got the fire to stop...

Turned of the unpluged the refer and turned off the 50 amp service to MH>

The hole was in the tubes inside the chamber. Very small hole as it must have taken close to 25 minutes for the hissing of escaping gas to stop.

This motor home had burnt down before we bought it from a Norcold fire so I have alway been very careful about leveling. Always.

So anyway we gave thought to residential but we like to boon dock and are very happy fulltiming with this 4 door Norcold size refer. And we our very short of funds at this time. So Checked out a few things and what we are going to do is drive from here at French Camp Ms. up to the guys that make the Amish Unit up in Shipshewana, Indiana (779 miles!!) and getting a Amish Unit installed on Tuesday of next week.

So I am going to shout right here: DO NOT TELL ANYONE WHO HAS RED LIGHT COME ON THE LITTLE BLACK BOX, EVEN IF THEY DO NOT SEE YELLOW RESIDUE, TO USE A MAGNET AND RESET THE BOX!!! I mean I was RIGHT THERE and almost did not get the 900 degree fire put out.

Good thing was that the Little Black Box did what it was suppose to do and shut the unit down.

I will be buying the new add on (arp?) that is suppose to shut down the refer if it over heats and stays off for 10 minutes. Even the Amish guy says that it is a good add.

You're braver than I am, going to bed at night wondering if we're going to blow up or burn up isn't my idea of a good time. We went the Samsung route.

After the ten best years of our lives fulltime in that beautiful coach we learned a few things that may be helpful to others. Hope it's going well for you.

We are sure happy with ours and have been for the three or four years we've had it. It's SO great to have the food getting cold or stay frozen RIGHT away. Yay!
